So why does that page still say it's free for "new" customers?
What is HD Access?

HD Access is the name of DIRECTV's HD service. If you have a High-Def TV, you need HD service to get an HD picture. Your TV alone won't give you an HD picture. HD Access provides the HD service you need to see the HD channels available in your TV package. This service is now FREE if you're a new DIRECTV customer. No matter how many HD receivers you have in your DIRECTV system, there's no extra charge to receive HD channels.
And is it free for life or for 24 months?

Free for life if you're a new customer. Free for 24 months for most existing.

And the fee will probably disappear somewhere along those 24 months, along with the credit.

They went in and changed the wording.

Here was a screen capture before the wording change.

Hmmm,
Wonder how long till they credit us all ....

I just got off the phone with them. The CSR emphasized that it's a NEW customer feature. She would give me the Free service today, only for 24 months, and only if I enroll in auto-pay.

Somehow "for life" got lost in the shuffle.

I told her it might be time for me to call Time Warner Cable, or at least try calling tomorrow morning when another CSR is on-duty.

Should have pointed her to the correct website page where it said that HD was FREE for all :)

First call this afternoon was told this was for new customers only.

Second call (to different rep) got be 24 months free.

Signed up in April... was told that since I was still a "new" customer I qualified for the free HD for life but I would have to sign up for autopay... not a problem since I pay it the same day every month anyway.

2 yrs free

I just called direct TV and received 2 yrs free HD :) with no auto pay because I am billed through Verizon. In two yrs I'll call and fight for free HD for life. I doubt you will receive it automatically. The promotion for free Hd for life (to new customers) ends 7/21/10

$15, to cover all the hassles they've had to go through and to pay all the csr's overtime from answering 50,000 "can I have free HD?" calls.

Thanks for the info guys. I just called in, got 24 months, no hassle. Agent said I would get more than a $10 credit because the hd dvr fee would be also be waived. We'll see.
