It is a new dawn at DISH.

Yeah. I was initially shocked by Dish' generosity with the B@H package. It is totally unlike them to offer something for nothing.
They simply upgraded the Platinum pack to Platinum Pack with Disc-by-Mail, and called it Blockbuster @ Home. (and Blockbuster Movie Pass for a coupla months.).

GREAT IDEA. How about BB@H for the normal $10 a month. Add $5 and you get Two free PPVs of your choice anytime that month (that makes em $2.50 each). Add $10 (so total of $20) and get 5 PPvs of your choice any time (that makes em $2.00 each).

Dish Corp Marketing do you you ever read these threads? Lots of good ideas here for you to make more profit.

Does anyone know the raw cost to DISH for the PPV? Hard to know what profits would be if you don't know what the greedy studios are charging DISH. Not that DISH isn't also greedy, just sayin. I have been with DISH for 15 years and have ordered 1 , maybe 2 PPV in that time. I agree too expensive.

Well, considering Dish PPV is almost always $1-$2 more than other carriers, and Dish is notorious for driving hard bargains with content providers, never paying more than other carriers for the same programming, I'd say they are making a killing on them.

However, I also think they probably aren't selling as many PPV's as they could due to the ridiculous pricing. If they would adopt Amazon-style pricing $2.99 - $4.99 as opposed to $5.99-$6.99, they would sell far more.

They can sell half as many PPV's and still make just as much if their profit is double on each PPV than it would be if they sold them for another few bucks cheaper.

It seems that way to us. But I know there are people expert in determining such things, and it appears they believe the higher prices are how to maximize returns.

I don't think the prices are too high, considering the cost and trouble of driving to a store or kiosk, or having multiple download boxes, etc. But I'm not big on PPV. I have well over a hundred BDs, and I'll bet around half haven't even been watched yet.

With the cost of gas these days, it would cost more to go to the video store to get it then back again to return it than what Dish charges unless you are in the area where the video store is anyways. I am sure services like Netflix has put a hurting on PPV purchases and the video stores. That is why I assume that Dish bought Blockbuster to help make up for some of that revenue that they no longer receive from PPV's.

I think that as gas keeps climbing closer to that $5.00/gl mark, that we all know the oil companies want to hit, that some people do factor the cost and inconvenience of driving to rent a movie vs the $6.99 price, along with the hassle of having to return it. But in saying that, I like most others here, the only time I ordered PPV was when they had the specials at .99, and when I had to PPV certificates. In the 200 pack w/B@H, I can always fine something to watch for free, plus I get my 2 disc from the mail about every week. (BTW: BlockBuster by mail has really improved for me. They are now just about equal to the same turn over time I had with Netflix. Only problem is I still can't figure out how they decide what disc they're going to send you next...but hey, as long as they keep them coming fast, I'm fine with it.):D

I'd bet they'd sell more than twice as many PPVs at the lower prices.

I guess it greatly depends on how far away one lives from a video store.... I mean, if your car only gets 15mpg, at $5/gal, that's a whopping $0.33 a mile (if my math is correct). Also, if a person combines their trip with other errands, the cost is lower yet.

Many people live 15-20 miles round trip so that's a gallon of gas easily. It is easier for some people to pay the rental fee of a video at the time they do it instead of one big bill at the end of the month which may be just one PPV or several tacked onto their existing bill.

Not if it's limited to driving $20 miles or paying $6.99! (Thank bog it isn't.)

I'm sorry, I didn't realize that they only way for you to watch a movie was to drive $20 miles or pay $6.99 thru PPV. I guess you really don't have much choice...

You are right Hall. I never would but I know some that have or some that were about to be late to return the movie so they did to avoid the late charge which is another advantage of renting PPV through Dish. I don't rent PPV's. You can get a movie package for a month for what two PPV's cost or a whole month of Netflix/Blockbuster at home (if you have broadband where you live).
