I am wanting 4K DVR service on three tvs.

With Dish I am paying 135.72 a month for a HWS,SJ, and joey1.0 with 200 service+ showtime plus protection plan. Upgrading to an H3 and 2 4k joeys is $250. So to get what I want would be:
3257.28.....135.72 x 24 for service
250...........Upgrade fee
$3507.28 to stay with Dish for the next 2 years and get 4K DVR service on three tvs.

If I switch to Directv and go with a HR54 and 2 C61K clients plus Xtra service, Showtime, and protection plan it will cost.
247.83 for months 1-3 or 82.61 a month
878.48 for months 4-12 or 97.61 a month
1663.68 for months 13-24 or 138.64 a month
2789.99 total
- 240 or 10 a month for bundling with my ATT Wireless
$2549.99 to go to direct for the next two years and get 4K DVR service on three tvs.

That is a difference of $957.29
So I ask is the H3 really $957.29 better than the HR54

It depends on what you want. Have you ever used DirecTV equipment? If you haven't, you might be in for a rude awakening. I had a HR44, it was OK, but nothing compared to the Hopper w/ Sling and especially the Hopper 3. I think that the HR54 is basically the same as the HR44, (I believe that they have the same processor, etc..) You'll be giving up 11 tuners (plus PTAT if you use that any) from a Hopper 3 upgrade. Plus the HR54 will not pass 4K without the C61 so if you want 4K at all 3 TV sets, you'll need a C61 client at each (I think) unless the HR54 can pass 4K via RVU if your TV supports it. Also, not sure if you figured this in or not, but DirecTV now has a 1st receiver fee too (not that Dish is fee poor by any means).

1. You may be able to get the upgrade fee waivered

2. You may also be able to get some credits if you threaten to move to Direct.

By getting a fees waived, and by asking for a $15 credit for the first 12 months(you can probably do better, I am low balling it) that would bring that calculation to about $22 difference per month. Considering the new customer pricing, and that You cannot be absolute with those calculations until the second year starts(Feb price increases 2017), and you get 11 more tuners and more capability. Plus if you sub to the ST or forget to remove it, that will affect your bottom dollar as well, making the savings not nearly as much as you calculate. Now, the biggest question. Is that calculation with or without the RSN fee? So now it is up to you to decide, what is worth it to you. Me personally, I'm sticking with Dish. The H3 is awesome.

Unless you are on a pretty tight budget I would say you are overthinking things way too much. If you are willing to pay over $130 a month for TV it's obvious you don't mind spending money on it. If you really like Dish and their equipment just go for it. If you refuse to pay an upfront fee of that much then just tell Dish that's not good enough and you'll go to DirecTV. Never hurts to try.

You've been through that hell? It was one of the things that made my decision to move back to DISH that much easier.

Ok since two people have said this, what is the downside to having combined billing to save $10 a month? I use paperless with autopay anyway.

I took an offer from AT&T in October, 2015 for new cell service (I already had DirecTv) and specifically stated I did not want combined billing, because I heard it was a nightmare. Well, to make a long story short, they didn't listen and haven't correctly billed me for my DirecTv since then. Now it doesn't matter, because I just switched to DISH, but I can't tell you how many hours I wasted on the phone trying to fix the clusterf**k that was caused by their incompetence.

I can't even access a correct on-line bill through DirecTv anymore. I have to call in to DirecTv to make sure all is well with my bill until my cancellation is complete.

You can bundle Dish with phone companies in many areas and I never recommend it. It lets you save $5 and puts your TV, phone and internet all on one bill but it's just a headache if you ever want to make changes to your account.

I had a bundled Dish account with CenturyLink back when they were still CenturyTel. It was a mess to deal with and not worth the $5 off. It was hard to get special offers or discounts, etc... Because you were dealing with CenturyTel rather than Dish.

It's BS to compare new customer deals to ongoing charges. If that's your game, switch every 2 years. BTW, there is a reason for Hopper 3 $150 on your account (credit, time since last upgrade, ongoing credits, payment history, etc.), and 4k Joeys are $50 each for everyone. Some have been successful in getting $150 charge waived.

Hopper 3 compared to Genie on value? You're kidding, right?

Is Speed Of New Joey 2 , same or Faster then Wireless Joey
