How to update Firmware on a Sirius Model S50 Radio?

I have a new (purchased on eBay) Sirius S50 Satellite radio that I got to replace one that died. Even though it was new, it was from old inventory that had an early version of the firmware installed. I would like to update it with the latest firmware developed but the model S50 is no longer supported by SiriusXM. Does anyone know where I can find the latest firmware and a procedure to install it?

Sirius receiver firmware comes only through a satellite download.

You need to call SiriusXM and ask them if they make the firmware available on a limited basis. You'll need to have the radio turned on and the car parked where it can receive a satellite signal if and when this happens.

I was reading an old notice and they suggested that the receiver should be left on for at least three hours to make sure all of the receiver models had been cycled through.

Along those lines, if there is an update that would be pushed it would be accomplished by leaving the radio on for a long period of time as harshness says. If you don't get an update it's worth calling them but generally your radio should be updated automatically.

I've contacted SiriusXM a few times about this and no one has offered any help. They simply say that it's obsolete and they don't have any suggestions. When this model radio was supported by SiriusXM, you connected it to a PC with special software to maintain and update the radio. It would be great if this wasn't necessary and they could update it over the air. I know the last and latest version of the firmware is version 1.5.6., so if I can find the right person at Sirius to broadcast it, I'll be all set.

While the sound system or COMAND unit may have been something that could be updated, the instructions from MB say that the Sirius receiver portion requires a satellite download. I've seen at least one independent (and seemingly authoritative) confirmations of this on MB forums (HBerman on mbworld in particular).

I did read about updating the COMAND firmware to accommodate a change that Sirius made to their traffic service but it was for the navigation side of things, not for the satellite receiver.
