HOPPER 3 UPGRADES

Western digital duo. RAID 1 mirroring of the dual 2TB drives. I'm assuming it will work fine since I used the previous model in the past. Ill have it tomorrow.

Since both drives mirror, whatever it is connected to only sees one drive. If one drive fails, your data is safe on the other drive and you just pop in a new drive and it will mirror again.

I know it says it's a hardware RAID but it looks like the only way to configure it is with the WD software while connected to a computer. So I assume you can just set it as RAID 1 on your PC then connect it to the Hopper and format. Is this how your old model worked?

No point in wasting money on unusable space.

I suspect that the s/w sets an EEPROM to RAID 1, rather than using switches.

Plenty of other RAID boxes out there that let you use your own drives of whatever size.

I asked about this before, and less than 5% have two Hoppers, so not sure where you are getting this 30 to 40% number.

The one I got is not dual 4TB's, it's dual 2TB drives. They sell a 2, a 4 and a 8TB model IIRC. Second, you can put whatever drives in it you want later. I like that it comes with two reliable WD drives. The model I bought years ago was empty and you just threw in whatever HDD's you wanted.

To change from RAID 0 to RAID 1, you hook it to a pc and change the settings with the WD software.

Yeah, that was exactly it. Set it to mirror with the WD manager, and then connected to the 722. I then tested the RAID 1 setup by pulling a drive while leaving on in, and the 722 never noticed a difference and all the files played off either drive.

It is everybody, Dish/Echostar pushed back the ship date to their distributors by one week. I have ordered a few more things from him, and he was telling me that they wouldn't be here until next week either, that's probably why he went ahead and sent an email to me.

what are you gonna do with your (3) 30" dishes when you get the hopper 3? and why do you have 3 dishes? los? or just stronger signal?

I had to have a tech out last Monday 1-11. I asked about the Hopper 3 and he told me he had some on the truck,and that he was going for training on how to install the next day.

Thanks for being a DISH customer and I am so glad you are enjoying both our technology and service.

You are correct that at launch we will have a Hybrid LNB for 1000.2 WA DISH (that does not include 118.7) and support for a single Hopper3 per account. As you can imagine, with 16 tuner support, we had to develop new LNB technology and the new LNBs are being manufactured based on most common installs.

Having said that – there are two options for your install

Option 1 – available immediately:
For 118.7, you will have to install a wing dish to 118.7, that will then go into the input port of the Hybrid LNBF and enable 16 Tuners on the Hopper 3
For multiple Hopper 3’s – you will have to install a second dish with a second Hybrid LNBF. So if you need 118.7 and 2 Hopper 3’s – there will be a total of 3 dishes.
Option 2 – available towards the end of this year. We will have a new switch DPH42 – that will support using your existing 1000+ DISH and existing LNB and will also allow you to have more than one Hopper 3. So you will not require a 2nd DISH, will not have to change your current LNB and you can have multiple Hopper3’s. Since this part is still under development, I do not have a more specific date than Q4-2016 at this time.

Since Dish is "planning" to allow this (keeping the older receiver for a short time to off-load recordings), I suspect they have a system in place to accommodate this. It could be as simple as authorizing (2) receivers at a time on an account and once the old receiver is rec'd by Dish, it then removes that 2nd receiver's authorization.

Only thing is I thought the LNB will only support the Hopper 3 and not a 2nd Hopper.

Oh wow that's great news. When they introduced the hybird lnb they mentioned it was the 1st of 2 rollouts. It's nice to have a clearer picture of what that 2nd rollout is going to be.

The "old" Hopper doesn't need to be connected (??). Maybe they will extend or disable the automatic de-authorization after "x" days (??). Just speculating....
