5 quick ways to rapidly improve the Raiders defense:

Yes, I fully realize that this is just the preseason. But if what you've seen from the Oakland Raiders, specifically the defense, over the course of the first three exhibition games doesn't alarm you in some way shape or form then you must be from the George W. Bush school of reading the warning signs of a dwindling economy.

Even in victory over the Cowboys, the first team defense couldn't stop the run. In a one point loss to the 49ers, the defense allowed 275 yards on the ground to the second, third and scout team running backs. Most recently, the first team defense couldn't stop anything the Saints did.

Not all is lost. This team still plays in the AFC Worst and there is reason to be optimistic. The good news is that the Chiefs are already hitting the panic button now that Scott Mitchell Matt Cassel is injured. The Broncos got abused by Jay Cutler and the Bears, making one wonder just how much worse off the Donkey defense is than Oakland's. The bad news is that the Silver and Black are still in a six year drought against San Diego.

With all that being said, here are 5 quick fixes Tom Cable can implement immediately to keep the Raiders in the hunt for the AFC West crown.

5. Bench Cornell Green – How he still has a starting job is amazing. Green is a penalty machine who couldn't pick up a blitz if he found it at the bottom of a Krispy Kreme box. Khalif Barnes might have been unwilling to play right tackle, but when he returns from injury Cable should leave him no choice. Either play on the right side of the line or stay home.

4. Start Desmond Bryant – Is it a bad sign that your best defensive tackle is an undrafted free agent who was second team All-Ivy League at Harvard? Not if he's the only guy on the line who goes all out on every snap it's not. I don't care how much money Tommy Kelly is making. Gerard Warren was a bust when Cleveland let him go five years ago. No more scholarships. Play the best players. Period!

3. Trevor Scott is not an every down player – He led all rookies in sacks last season. Good for Trevor. But all that proves is he can rush the passer. Against the run, Scott disappears like LeBron James after being eliminated from the playoffs. Start Bryant at defensive tackle, move Kelly to the end and utilize Scott on passing downs only. Scott is like that car sitting in a redneck's front yard; he can't get off blocks.

2. Electroshock therapy for JaMarcus Russell – To be fair, Russell has played some great ball in the preseason. He's made a few errant throws, but has looked confident in the pocket and is getting better and better each day. The problem is he still holds onto the rock too long. Attaching a few electrodes to that WMD on his right shoulder will learn him to get the ball out in three seconds or less. Quick decisions, confident throws, being aware of the pressure; these are the keys to quarterback supremacy.

1. Give Darren McFadden the rock all day everyday – I hate to sound like a broken record with this but I don't care how you do it, Cable. It doesn't matter who bitches at you on the sideline because they're not getting their touches. Run-DMC is poised to pop every time he gets his hands on the pill. He's as big a homerun threat as any name you'll find in the BALCO client rolodex. Get him involved early and often. Trust me, once he gets going, the whole playbook opens up. Just one word of advice: if Cornell Green is in the game, don't run McFadden to the right side of the field.

Five very simple solutions that might not equate to another Lombardi in Al's trophy case, but it will prevent suffering anymore 45-7 embarrassments.

I just hope Seymour was worth it....if we have ANY semblance run stopping defense, we will win the game. Their game is to exploit our weakest point...our run defense.

...I am quietly optimistic...

2008 Player Stats, Passing Touchdowns
Drew Brees - 34 (offensive player of the year)
Phillip Rivers - 34

Brees threw for 1000 more yards, but you'll have to do pretty well in pass defense too as Rivers is more than competent.

Cable came out and said DHB just wasn't ready.

A lot of times you hear a head coach talk about one of his impressive rookies and say, "The game is not too big for him."

Raiders coach Tom Cable said the opposite about number seven overall pick Darrius Heyward-Bey Tuesday after the rookie's two drop, zero catch debut.

"I thought I saw a real nervous uptight young man, a lot of big eyes, Cable said. "As I've mentioned to them, they'll have their highs and their lows as they go through this thing. We'll expect him to be better next week. . . . He has to learn how to handle this. No question."

If he's going to be rattled his first game at home, can only imagine him in Arrowhead next week.

JaMarcus was 0-10 to Receivers not named Murphy last night, and when Schilens is back he's going to take reps away from Murphy, not DHB. Won't matter if he doesn't get more accurate though, 13-30 isn't going to cut it. I think they lost that game in part because of whatever is going on with Javon Walker, another sure handed receiver would have gone a long way. He says he's 100%, Cable says he isn't.

Well, it was clear that staring 2 rookie WR was alot to handle. The experienced CB the Bolts had gave them a lesson. They had all kinds of trouble coming off the line to run their pass routes. THAT cause, IMHO, alot of over throws by JaMarcus because he expected receivers to be at certain spots....and they weren't. Things will improve once Thillens is back. DO NOT be surprised, if healthy, that Johnny Lee Higgins starts getting alot more playing time. He certainly did late in the game until he got popped pretty hard in a cross pattern. Personally, I thought it was gonna be Higgins AND Thillens starting ANYWAY.

Don't go by the player saying he is 100%. Players can be missing a arm AND missing 4 out of 10 toes and STILL say they are 100%.

They loss because the ghost of Fat-Tub-of-Goo was there playing the bull**** prevent defense on 3rd down and foreveron 2 occassions late in the game and 2 costly long kick returns by Sproles. The Raiders where beating the crap out of San Diego all game long...what was proven was GOOD teams know how to win games they have no business winning....bad/young teams some how lose games they should have won.

Excellent post! :up

Looks like they've activated Javon Walker, Higgins is questionable with a sprained shoulder in one of the hardest clean hits you'll ever see.

Returner Nick Miller is now out 4-6 weeks as well... was out week 1 with what was described as shin splints, now out with a hairline fracture in his ankle 4-6 weeks.

Sorry, but JaMarcus is awful. He may still get the couple throws he managed to hit against SD against us to win the game somehow, but holy cow this guy is inaccurate. Then just as I was telling my friend how Russel is great at lobbing it to a point, he lobs it out of bounds to DHB toward the end zone.

3/13 just before the first half, wow.

And he DID looked terrible, as if he still had timing issues.....BUT, they needed a drive at the end to win the game....and they got. I do not care HOW they got the win...they got it.

....I want steak, I do NOT CARE how you kill the cow.

LMAO!!! Line of the year!! Love it, Salsa!! :D :up

It was pretty much a miracle given his performance on the day. 4 of his 7 completions (out of 24 attempts) were on that final drive.

A win is a win, but how many can you win with less than 100 net yards from your QB, with single digit completions, and 7 punts?

But does not mean anything. Last week, he played better and the team would have won had it not been to the terrible defensive calls on 3rd and forever....that's how it goes, there are games you should not win...and you do. Then there are games you should win...and you don't.:o

That's one way of sugar-coating Russell. Or maybe he needs to work harder. He missed a lot of receivers that appeared to be running screens or were check-off throws. Sorry, but I think he has a great arm but absolutely no finesse, when he needs it. Too many mental errors also.

He's just not lobbing it up to a Bowe-caliber receiver every play like he was in college. During the first Monday night game they made it sound pretty dire, that at this point you are either accurate or you aren't, it's not something that gets better/worse... it's a skill you should already posses. He'd throw more picks if his throws were in the same ballpark on many plays, but they aren't, so he doesn't.

I think what happens to improve this is they only run a certain kind of offense that caters to the kind of throws he can make, and if that is too limiting, then they need a new QB. They likely will need a new one anyways, and if they tank this season (ie cant run the ball down everyone's throat) and have a moderately high draft pick I think they seriously consider taking one in the first.

It's not sugar coating at all. The Raiders expect Thillens, Higgins and Walker to be the main 3 receivers. SOMETHING(injury, falling out of favor with the coaches, whatever) happened to Walker, Thillens got broke a bone after game 2 and the Raiders had to start 2 rookies at reciever. TWO GUYS that barely participated in the optional practices because they had no reason to be there because they were not signed. Those recievers have been schooled by veteran CB because they have had a TERRIBLE time coming off the line to run their routes. The coaches have made it simple for JaMarcus to throw to spots. And many times, because those recievers are not there....those passes looked terrible. MANY times, those rookies have not been where they are not supposed to be. He has NO ISSUES...NONE AT ALL, getting the ball to Zack Miller. In BOTH games, JaMarcus has HAD to be accurrate to lead to late drives for TDs...the 3rd and 10 for a TD late in the 1st half that was called back...the 4 and 16 for a TD to give the Raiders a temporary lead against the Bolts and the winning drive against the Chiefs, he had to hit 3 key 3rd down passes to continue the drive.

...does anyone talk about that? Nope. For as terrible as he has passed, he could EASILY be 2-0

I have seen both games and believe me, he is not completely to blame on what is happening offensively. Remember....he had ONLY started 16 games since being drafted by Oakland....not even enough to be considered a complete season.
