Previously, I used TV channel surfing, commercials for other TV shows, and commercials for movies in order to figure out what I wanted to watch. Now that TV is basically online, I find it difficult to figure out what to watch.

Streaming services show tiles of shows and movies, which do not really tell me if something is worth watching.

Therefore, help me replicate how I find things:

1. What are good websites that will tell you what is currently playing in movie theaters? Or movies that have played in movie theaters. (There are bad movies in theaters, sure, but having something get released in a theatre is sometimes a good sign that something is worth looking into).

2. What are good websites telling me what has recently been added to DVD or is about to be on DVD? (DVDs are a thing of the past; however, if something is still released on DVD it needs to reach at least some bar of quality).

3. Are there any websites or online channels that feature commercials for TV shows.

4. Any other way to find quality content that I might be interested in.

Go to Youtube and search movie trailers or TV trailers, depending on what you are looking for. Also, most streaming services have a recommendations section in the user interface that uses what you've watched (and liked) in the past to suggest other things you may like. Depending on what streaming device you are using, that may also be a function of the device itself.

I have built myself my own mini cable system using DIZQUE and Plex.

I made a Classic MTV channel with has all my favorite music videos. It has all the classic MTV bumpers and time period correct commercials inserted between the videos. Its just like watching real MTV again.

I also made a VH1 Classics Channel that has song from the 60's and 70's. Again time period appropriate commercials.

I also have a MASH channel, and a How Its Made Channel which just plays random episodes of those shows.

I made a Wrestling Channel, but just deleted it because I found its no fun watching old episodes of regular wrestling shows.

For all the bumpers and commercials I ripped them from YouTube.

I do have a Concert Channel as well as a Movie Channel which play random concerts and movies. Since I have a Plex Pass I turned on the option to show trailers before a movie plays. I even made some animated intros of things like "Welcome to the Show" And "Enjoy the movie" with graphics for "ScottVision" using the FlexClip website which was free.

Creating and maintaining my own "Cable system" is fun for me, working on it is one of my happy places. :D

I really like highdefdigest.com for this. they do a decent job of going through press releases, talking about additional content, and even doing reviews
