H/J vs Directv mrv

For me the "transparent" trick play at each location is important. With D* that means a DVR at each location and an additional $99+ per drop. I know you can do the record and then watch trick, but I have D* now at our family vacation home and hate that part of it. Also had Uverse for a few months and hated their implementation of record then watch as well.

The trick play issues should change once D* has a shipping RVU client, was hoping they would be around the same time as Hopper/Joey, but it doesn't look likely from what I've seen so far.

Also in all the price comparisons, we seem to be ignoring the $20 "advanced receiver fee" for new business. Granted it is promo'd down to $10 currently, but it gives me pause.

Once everything is 100% accurate and all possible features are mentioned, I will post this spreadsheet in its own thread.

You guys have said that D* is coming out with a receiver that relies on the one of the HR34's tuners, I think you call it a rvu receiver? Anyhow, is there any word on a monthly fee for this unit? Maybe cheaper due to it not being an actual tuner?

There's been nothing official from D* about pricing that I've seen, but I would expect it to be $6/month just like all their other 'additional tv' fees.

Perhaps you are waiting, since the ability to see the second Hopper is not yet implemented.

When completed the name of secondary receiver should also include Hopper and then number of tuners on secondary receiver would be 3 and able to use a DVR as secondary would also be Yes.

Can you use a hopper as a streaming device from another hopper?

I created a little spreadsheet comparing the two. Let me know if anything needs to be added or changed.

The secondary receiver rows are misleading, as I see you left out a 2nd Hopper as a secondary receiver. Did you purposefully leave it out because full integration between hoppers isn't active yet? That would also change the secondary receiver tuners to "0 or 3", and "Able to use a second receiver as a DVR?" as "Yes".

Use as a standalone Receiver or DVR?

What does this mean? The Hopper can definitely be used as a standalone DVR.

Two hoppers can be used in the same setup. Currently, the software is not available to see each other.

Then one cannot be used as a secondary device of the other? With Direct, you can use a second DVR as a secondary MRV device from the main device used as the server, hence up to 5 additional tuners on the secondary device.

It cannot be used as a secondary MRV device where each one can see the other.

I may have to rename that row to make it a little more clear. I am currently trying to list the number of tuners within one MRV setup with the primary host or server DVR listed as the primary and the other receivers/DVRs that see the primary DVR listed as secondary.

For those who've ever wondered how Dish refurbishes their receivers...
