What are the advantages to either that you know of? A few off the top of my head lean toward Directv. Both have the $10/whole home/dvr/fee. Dish is charging $7 per additional rec & Direct is charging $6 per additional rec. Direct has a leg up with the fact every TV is a live tuner by itself. Dish has the advantage with prime time whenever time, but that is the only advantage I can see. I would love to see some side by side comparisons excluding programming & hear what others have to say. As always new customers will be able to take advantage of either with the least amount out of pocket, so with that said this thread is the nuts & bolts based on monthly fees/technology & not what it cost you to upgrade to either 1.

From the demos I've seen it's so fast you can't even read it, is that an advantage?

The faster the better imho ... anyone who has dealt with the older HR series and blue GUI can attest to that...

Pre hr24 I assume?

Can someone explain with a legitimate answer how dish's h/j is better than the D* mrv?

I have an HR24 also, the hoppers / joeys at CES still beat the cr*p out of it in speed ;) and this is legitimate I've seen both in action. Another plus no need for SWM tech, you can use RG59 to the joeys if needed (if it is already ran). If your tv is mounted on the wall there are brackets where the joey can hide behind the tv.

Ok fair enough to say dish is faster on the gui. How about live tuners? Lets say a 4 room dish with 1 hopper & 3 joeys compared to 1 hr34 & 3 h25's, which would have the most versatility for live TV & recording options? I want to add D* is $3 cheaper than dish with this setup on 4 TV's.

The D* system will have more tuners and be a bit more versatile because of that. But depending on what you want to view, how you want to view it and when you want to view it, the H/J could be much more than good enough.

I did some looking today at my 3 HR24 MRV setup. And because of what I watch and the fact that I watch very little live, I could replace the 3 HRs with a Hopper and Joey. Virtually everytime there is a contention in recording, it is during prime time and involves 2 or more local broadcast stations, at that time you effectively have 6 tuners. 2 actual and 1 devoted to PTAT. At other times of the day or night, I generally don't have more than 2 tuners recording anything at all.

So which is best is more determined by what you want to do than the actual number of tuners.

woah 3 bucks cheaper! how about programming costs added to the bill?

Direct would be 3 bucks cheaper but you also get a 5-tuner DVR. You have to add a second Hopper for at least $199 upfront plus another $7 per month in fees to catch up on tuners. Now if you don't need the additional tuners, that's another matter. Programming is mostly a wash if you look at it during the promo period, remembering Direct gives some discount over both years and Dish just over one. I suppose if you look at the lower priced Dish tiers (all HD, Family Pack, etc.), Dish may come out on top.

For a heck of a lot of customers, the HR34 and Hopper would effectively be the same because of PTAT. Probably most customers in fact.

If you were a new customer and got an HR34 w/3 receivers, or got a Dish Hopper with 3 Joeys. Then use Xtra with D* and T200 with E*, the cost per month in the first year would be exactly the same, $65.99. 2nd year D* would be slightly less as they have those 2nd year discounts and E* doesn't.

If you need more tuners then E's upfront cost for a new customer for the 2nd Hopper would be an issue to consider, but the monthly w/2 Hoppers + 2 Joeys would be the same.

Edit:
correction D*'s monthly 1st year would be $67.99, 2nd year would have a $10/month discount off, and D* would need $99 upfront for the HR34.

I'm not really familiar with the HR34. I'd you use that unit and a mixture of standard receivers can you pause/rewind live TV? What about the HR34 and the TV-only config?

That was one feature I felt that the H/J has over the original MRV solution from DirecTV.

Of course the HR34's big advantage is that it it out and known to work. The Hopper? We have a release date and (in my case) high hopes.

The HR34 is a 5 tuner receiver. You can add HD receivers and be able to view the programs from the HR34 in other rooms. Right now Directv gives you H25's which is a single tuner HD receiver. so a Hr34/3 H25's gives you 8 tuners. They will be coming out with a RVU unit (like a Joey) that uses one of the tuners on the HR34

you can use a HR34 on one TV and thats it. Thats what I just did. Replaced the R22's (2 tuner HD DVR's) and a H23 (HD receiver) for the HR34. Saves me $12 in receiver fees.

Can a stand alone hopper without any joeys still incur the whole home fee?

I've seen many posts saying Yes. I guess it's a "whole home option" fee.

Doesn't matter what it's called. It is what it is.

I need to ask the same question for the hr34 as a stand alone unit, any mrv fee when used alone?

using a joey on sdtv

For those who've ever wondered how Dish refurbishes their receivers...
