I had some recent conversations with DISH on the continued availability of a certain set of stations. Don't ask me why but for some reason they decided to bless me with a 722 to replace my 508. Since I am contemplating another HDTV purchase this is good news. i do not truly understand it but why look a gift horse (or 7220 in the mouth.

Have you checked your account?

yes. I am pretty sure I will be paying fora second DVR but otherwsise I have lucked out.

As for this not being standard that is my whole point. I exchanged emails on the topic I mentioned above they gave me an answer that I thought was correct (but different than what others have heard) and now this.

BTW the email telling me they were sending it arrived AFTER the package. My son called to tell me i had a package from DISH and I assumed he meant the DishStore as I had ordered something from there recently.

I am completely nonplussed. but like I said ia m not going to question this too much.

The 508, isn't MPEG4 compliant nor requires a monthly DVR fee.

Someone at Dish likes you... and more of your money, as well.

On the down side, you'll now pay an additional monthly DVR fee.

NOTICE: Plug the 722 into a phone line or you'll more than likely be charged an additional monthly outlet fee.

Read the fine print via Dish Network regarding Service Fees:

Additional Outlet Programming Access Fee: a non-refundable additional outlet programming access fee of (in the case of a model ViP211, 411, ViP612 DVR tuner and tuner number one in a model ViP722 DVR, ViP622 DVR or ViP222 receiver) or $5 per month (in the case of all other tuners) will be charged to your account for each tuner activated beyond the first. (For the purpose of determining the amount of this fee and whether it applies to a particular tuner, tuner number one shall be deemed to be activated prior to tuner number two in a dual tuner receiver and model ViP211, 411, ViP612 DVR, ViP722 DVR, ViP622 DVR, and ViP222 tuners shall be deemed to be activated prior to all other tuners). One $5 per month additional outlet programming access fee will be waived on a monthly basis for each dual-tuner receiver (models 322, 522, 625, ViP222, ViP622 DVR, and ViP722 DVR) activated. This fee will be waived on a monthly basis for each such receiver that DISH Network confirms has been continuously connected to your same land-based phone line and/or (solely in the case of a model ViP622 DVR or ViP722 DVR) continuously connected to your same broadband home network resulting in the functionality of the applicable receiver’s Internet-based features. DISH Network’s confirmation process(es) shall be the sole method(s) utilized to determine if your additional outlet programming access fee(s) will be waived; DISH Network DVR Service Fee: a non-refundable $5.98 per month DISH Network DVR service fee will be charged to your account for each model 510, 522, 625, ViP612 DVR, ViP722 DVR, or ViP622 DVR receiver activated. Thank you. I am aware of the fees and even my 508 was connected to a phone line but I suspect that I will connect this by ethernet instead.

But since I am intersted ina second HD set as well as a dual tuner (plus OTA) DVR I like this.

BUt I am curous why are you telling me that the 508 is not MPEG 4 compliant. dis someone say it was? That si in fact another positive thing about this---I am one step closer to being ready for eastern Arc.

I think the reason why you may have received your 722; an MPEG2 to MPEG4 compliant upgrade newly implemented by Dish! They had announced their intent on leaving MPEG2 behind. You're perhaps one of the first persons to announce they've been upgraded, gratis! (Just keep an eye on your statements, just incase!) BTW, did they request the 508 be returned? That's a nice 'old school' model! Don't dis' it until it dies as it puts out great 480 via S-Video. You can upgrade its HDD as well to a larger capacity.

Link to your 508 manual (just in case): Tech Portal : 501/508

Geronimo,

One other note, the 722 is capable of only 1 HD output (but you can mirror; HDMI and component [Y, Pb, Pr] as they're both active). The other output of the 722 is SD, at present.

Ethernet will work for your connect in leu of phone, AND if your bandwidth is high enough, you'll be able to utilize new Dish-On-Demand, PPV via streaming internet servers at Dish!

thanks I know all thsi. My other receiver isa 622.

as for the MPEg 4 compliance they are only currrently upgrading ME2 HD boxes not SD ones. I also explained WHY I got this. It is a consequence of conversations I had with them about a particular group of channels. having said that I see no earthly reason why they should reward me for asking about it. I did absolutely nothing that would be ofany benefit to them or anyone else. But for once I am just going to enjoy it all.

New switch problems?
