GEOSATpro HDVR3500 - New DVBS2 STB - Photos and Initial Testing

Brian,

How did you manage to get the subtitles up? I've tried multiple networks in prime time and the receiver doesn't find subtitles on any channel.

I seem to recall at some point in the set up being asked if I wanted subtitles or closed captions. I presume the former is the European format and the latter is North American. Anyway, I can't find that setting again to check which one I chose. I thought it was closed captions, but perhaps I got it wrong. Any ideas?

Subtitles are technically different than Closed Captioning. In the menu there is a selection for the primary language for GUI and subtitles, but this does not affect Closed Captioning. Mine now is hit and miss on many of the channels. Seems like the HDVR3500 doesn't always see the closed Captioning data. Before, all i had to do was press the red color key on the remote when the CC indicator was lit on the channel banner.

I had previously viewed CC on many channels, but now they aren't displaying. I see CC on TSReader, so I know it is there. Left it parked for a few minutes on a channel carrying CC and now it is displaying. Looks like it needs to be looked at. :(

On a music channel with video, a message periodically flashes briefly on the screen saying 'Not available!'. Seems to happen about twice a minute. Let me know if you need more details. The music plays fine, and I can't detect any sound glitches when this happens. Here are screen shots showing the message and the signal strength (which was strong):

Haven't seen that message on the Music Choice channels. Does it happen on all MC channels or specific ones? Using time shift or DVR? Try disconnecting any external drive to test. The video bitrate is so low that the STB may be detecting that there is a loss of video.

Since there was a confirmation of a easy sub-1000 SR signal being tuned, does the frequency input allow fractions of a MHz, such as 1109.600 rather than just 1109 or 1110 whole MHz? There are sub-1000 SR radio distributions that don't fall close to a xxxx.000 whole MHz frequency so you need to enter a fraction MHz to get it on my PCl tuner card and software that allows fractional MHz frequency input.

Happened on all channels that I tried. Wasn't using an external drive. Even disconnected the network and tried all the time shift options and still got the warning message.

Most sat tuners use AFC for fine tuning but only display the MHz. Some receivers will show the KHz when accessing internal data, such as when you save a satellite list or access it via LAN. There are certainly cases where it would be nice to input the KHz range, at least down to 10KHz, where there are other narrow TPs close by. Of course the selectivity of your tuner and accuracy of the LNB LO are critical to this sort of fine-tuning... Maybe there is a possibility of adding this option in this receiver?

Cham, when it comes down to this micro-sensitivity, i will investigate if it makes sense to go with decimals, question comes up, will the receiver pick up the signal better because the decimal is entered?
For the signal bit rates, we are going to add the decimal on our commercial units due to requests from operators. Brian, can you comment?

Can anyone say niche request? LOL! If it can be done, why not.... Before investing engineering time, maybe Skysurfer would provide a few example transponders for testing? Who knows, the HDVR3500 may already log the services. :D

Tuner selectivity and LO stability aside, as pointed out, unlike the PCI tuner software, the STB AFC tunes a minimum +/- 3MHz. Unsure if it is necessary for adding the KHz entry unless testing of manual entry of an extremely narrow carrier provides a more reliable lock.

I certainly wouldn't suggest displaying the extended frequency in any menu except the manual transponder entry field. All other GUI should only show the 4 or 5 digit MHz resolution. Most FTA users are overwhelmed without adding decimal and 3 more digits! :D

A HDVR3500 owner made a request that I really like....

When the important "To Do" list is addressed, could the Service Information screen have a simple motor function added? Add "Step East/West" and "Save". This would simplify motor position fine-tuning and saving, instead of the multiple steps to enter the install menus.

Love it when FTA hobbyist come up with cool, "duh... That makes sense" suggestions!

Maybe I just have not located the right menu screen yet, but so far I have not been able to do a blind scan by polarity.
Is there some trick to it ?
Each time it just reverts to H polarity so everything shows up as being on H polarity.

Also for those taking screen shots, is there a function on the remote to do this?

Scan by polarity is available with new firmware. Please be careful updating.
If you would like to save your channels and settings, please go to Menu > Manager > Data Transfer > Transfer Service data to USB storage.

Once upgraded to new firmware, please go back to Data Transfer and select "Data download from USB storage"

Download new firmware at http://marketing.glorystar.tv/update/usb_update.bin

Go to Menu > Manager > Version > USB Upgrade and select the downloaded file from USB.

The next version will include the Disecq Motor Positions, i will make that one available for Automatic or Online Update.

I have seen a box appear for a split second and go away but had never been able to determine exactly what it was.
Now I know.
This only occurs on the music choice channels so far as I know.

Blind-Scan by polarity is now in there, however, when doing this it appears the channels are not kept in the scanned order.
I found some mixed in-between the other polarity channels that were in the receiver already.
This may need some more looking into.

They must be going in the channel list by the Frequency order and not the order that is scanned in.
I just realized this when checking it out against my excel spreadsheet of channel listings.

Can they go in by the order it is scanned?

Also, and this was brought up by another poster too, there is
no FEC display, nor the indication of the modulation DVB-S/S2, QPSK, 8PSK etc.
Sure would be nice to have this feature in the receiver.

My vote would to be to add an additional Channel List sort type: "Polarity". This sort type would organize the horizontal channels separately from the vertical channels. It is a throw back to the legacy receivers...

For those of us with polarity servo motors on our feedhorns, it would save wear and tear on the servo polarity motors as we surf through the channels. :)
