There's a great scene about two-thirds of the way through a recent episode of the current and final season of "Justified."In it, Deputy U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens, skillfully played as always by Timothy Olyphant, has just pulled up to a house where his series-long nemesis (and occasional ally) Appalachian outlaw Boyd Crowder, equally deftly portrayed by Walton Goggins, is staying. Crowder rushes out to meet Givens and the two quickly begin a verbal sparring match (fueled mainly by Crowder's desire to keep Givens from finding a wanted fugitive hiding inside) in which Givens reveals that the only thing keeping him from moving on to live with his ex-wife and baby in Florida is his vow to finally bring Crowder down."This is one of them classic stories where the hero gets his man and he rides off into the sunset," Givens says.

Actress Joelle Carter has been everybody’s favorite femme fatale in “Justified” for six years and 78 episodes. As the FX cult-favorite series comes to an end on Tuesday, the fate of her character, Ava, is still in question — she’s caught halfway between Boyd and Raylan. Carter, 42, has an offscreen life that doesn’t much resemble that of Ava’s. She lives in the Echo Park area of Los Angeles with her husband and their 4-year-old daughter, Luna. We caught up with her by telephone early on a recent morning, just as Luna was waking up. We heard barking in the background, which she explained was the family terrier, Waffles. Which led us to our first question.

And judging from an audience poll at Wednesday night’s “Evening With Justified” panel at the Paley Center for Media, it won’t be Boyd Crowder.Showrunner Graham Yost joined stars Timothy Olyphant, Joelle Carter, Erica Tazel, and Jacob Pitts to reflect on six seasons of FX’s coolest show. That set the stage for a Boyd/Raylan face-off, but the former knew better than to draw a (lent!) pistol, opting for prison instead. Raylan unexpectedly got the showdown he was looking for when Boon aimed to prove himself the quickest gun in the South, only to wind up about a half-inch to the left.

But after taking out Markham and turning his (empty) gun on Ava, Boyd was greeted by longtime rival Raylan (Timothy Olyphant), who ultimately opted to simply arrest his nemesis rather than kill him.

When it comes to the finales of long-running series, my sense is that avoiding watercooler status tends to work out in a show’s favor. This is something I’ve been thinking about in the lead-up to a Mad Men finale that is practically guaranteed to leave a decent chunk of that show’s audience some degree of unsatisfied. That’s just the way it goes these days: expectations are high and the chatter is loud. But for a show like Justified—which has been an acclaimed show and a popular show, just never a particularly buzzy show, at least not compared to its contemporaries—there’s much more hope that a finale will be able to stick the landing, simply because it has fewer masters. There were no unanswered questions that had to be dealt with in last night’s “The Promise,” no mystery boxes to be opened.

Read his words here, and remember that the line, “We dug coal together,” is pulled from both the pilot and the Elmore Leonard short story upon which it was based. You should also know that Leonard’s story, “Fire in the Hole,” ended with Boyd dead, as the pilot was originally supposed to, but that the author so enjoyed Goggins’ performance on the FX drama that he later resurrected the character in his 2012 novel Raylan.
