AJF - you might be right there :)

As for "unloading the 921" - you're right there too. My wife got a call a couple of days ago from E* trying to sell the 921 to her. Her response: "I know all about that box. I'm not interested." Smart lady, that Mrs Hancox :)

I have been a Dish customer for a long time. I can't understand how dish can do this to us. The 921 is still very unreliable and now they say no NBR. Also,
the OTA guide data fiasco sucks. OTA recording is still unusable in my book.
We need to be heard. The average user must really be frustrated not knowing the truth. Who do they turn to for answers. I am sure Dish tells them the truth.

Todd

Folks, I just heard from Charlie Ergen. (Yes really) and I have asked him for an explaination from Dish on whats going on.

I will post what he sends back to me.

I do thank Charlie for his help.

Chas said in the last chat the 942 will be shown at CES this January...

I'm going to CES and will check out the Dish booth. Maybe I'll bring my 811 with me and set it on fire there, give it a purposeful death.

I am glad I sold the 721 and never bought the 921. I am still a dish customer but will not be for long. When D* gets their act together with not compressing their signal so much, I am going to jump ship. Since I have been a Dish customers, I have seen this happening too many times.

Scott,

If Mr. Ergen can't provide any answers or at least some direction, I would contact the stock analysts who follow the Echostar stock.

While Dish apparently doesn't care about its "high-end" customer, just watch what happens the first time Dish gets a call from an analyst.

As I've said in another thread elsewhere, I am only hanging on to Dish because I have about one year left in my two year committment for a free 510. This whole business lately is truly incensing me. My programming will be dropping significantly in the next couple of months. By this time next year, if there has been more broken promises and unfixed problems, then I will re-evaluate which satellite provider will better provide for me and my family. Dish will lose a customer that pays $100+. CORRECTION: Dish IS losing a customer that pays 100+ per month.

Talk about weird coincidence. A minute or so after posting that message, I had to reload the guide data - AGAIN - then shortly after that got error message #005 - receiver is not authorized. At least the 811 doesn't have the NBR problem!

Dish need to FIRE their engineering department and buy from OEM's.

I will also be at CES and will be meeting with the Echostar folks at the show. (And I will be reporting on what I see and hear as well) :D

"Charlie called" -

I just do not understand the head of Dish/E*
- Does Charlie not know what his high spending customers want?
- Does Charlie not care?
- Does Charlie not know what his people are doing and/or planning and/or saying?
I know Charlie has made lots of money but how does he run a company like that.

I just got the follow note from Charlie. (It's sounding as if he is getting defensive)

S,

Please send me a list of advertised features...(and the advertisement) for
the 921...
And highlight the ones that are missing.

c

So does anyone want to put a list together of whats missing and when it was advertised that we can send to Charlie? :)

I just got another note from Charlie...

Got them already..just take the quotes (not out of context) and let me know
the features we promised..i get a script from engineering so let me know..i
assume you are saying nothing was printed that wasn't delivered?
c
Charlie wants quotes of what was said on Charlie Chats and Tech Chats. So please for you guys researching this please give exact quotes. :)

That's odd, they are asking YOU what the 921 features are. Shouldn't they know? Bad attitude from the CEO at the get go :(

You can get a copy of the original receiver spec PDF here. You might want to save a copy and send that copy instead of sending them the link. The link points to archive.org and their copy may mysteriously "vanish" at some future point in time. In it PDF, they clearly state it has 2 DishWire ports for connecting to select IEEE 1394 devices.

Don't forget about other receivers as well. 501/508/510/721 owners are getting screwed also.

From the Feb 9 Tech Chat (available from DBSTalk.com):
Paul – DVR510 questions. Can the unit be programmed not to record? It’s connected to a computer, so I don’t care about recording with it. How about named based recording? How about being able to protect weekly recording?

Dan Minnick – 510 is always recording, and not possible to turn it off. Most people want to use it as DVR product. Think about getting a 301 or 311. Working on it now, start rolling it out mid-year. Also add protect weekly timers mid year with the named based recording.

From the July 9th Retailer Chat (available from here):
He says that they are working on getting name based recording on the 522 by late summer or the fall. He also goes on to say they hope to add that functionality to other Dish DVRs by early next year.
Emphasis added in above quotes. Note that they indicate (assuming that the summaries are correct) that NBR is coming, specificly to the 510 in the first question from the Tech Chat, and to other receivers (not just the 522) from the Retailer Chat.

Scott,

I wonder which one of the current users viewing this thread is Mr. Ergen. BTW Thanks for calling them out on this

Bryan

Good job, cdru! :) I've archived that great PDF for myself as well. Now I bet the Wayback machine (archive.org) will soon stop archiving Dish Network's website...

On a related note, why does the 921 literature always list the SD recording time as 180 hours? I know that the DVR recording times can never be accurately estimated because of the nature of compression, but when I got my 921 and started playing with it I noticed the empty DVR screen showed the free time as 158 hours... I have a screen capture to prove it too, lemme know. :p :)
