External Hard Drive Archive Bug Thread

I'm new to the forum. Bugs and all, you'd still recommend this route rather than upgrading to the 722? I'm starting to save HD movies that I'm getting off of Cinemax, as well as any HD BSG I can get my hands on, of course.

I have a 622 and a 722 on the same set. Yes the 722 has more capacity, but it still doesn't compare to the capacity of a 750 GB external HDD which I have connected to the 622. I like to just scan the HD movie channels and just set 'em to record with abandon! Then I archive 'em as soon as they show up on my DVR list. It's pretty cool to just select 'Alien' and watch it directly from the HDD. It performs flawlessley.

Seem to have gotten a fix..

I added the external HD option the day it came out and added a Seagate Freeagent 500 GB external drive. Everything worked like a charm for a while and then I started having the same issues everyone here has had with the timeouts, error messages, etc. I just now ran the Seagate Tools from my laptop against my Seagate, turned the Sleep mode off completely, plugged it back in my DISH HD DVR, and it saw it and ran all the content flawlessly. This after the drive had been basically unusable for months. So we shall see how long this lasts.

I feel ya brother. I went through the same thing. Once I turned off sleep mode, |I have not had a problem since. Satelliteguys has saved my hard drive from being smashed, as well as gotten me Cinemax for $0.01 a year, you can't beat that!

Yeah I have had the same problem with my Seagate drive. So I just keep it unplugged and plug it in when I need to use it.

From what I hear a patch will be out in April to fix the problem.

Finally got an external HDD for my 622, a WD MyBook 500gb (WDH1CS5000N) over the weekend.

The first two recordings (two HD movies) moved over without a hitch, but since then any file larger than about 9gb, won't move. They stop after about 5-10 minutes with this 855 error: "An error occurred while transferring events to your USB storage device" :eureka

I can move a movie like The Big Lebowski (8+gb), but not Superman Returns (11+gb). I've tried restarting and powering off/on both the receiver and the HDD, with the same results.

I haven't seen any issues like this with the MyBooks in this thread. Should I exchange it for another, or is there anything else I can try??

I moved The Big Lebowski to my 1TB WD drive (I think it's a MyBook) the other day without issues. I will try to check to see how big it was though, and report back. I'm pretty sure I saw another show that I had moved, which was something like 12+gig.

I bought a Buffalo 500gb turbo drive station about a month ago - 10th of December or so - and it worked well from the beginning with the 622 I had at the time. My original excuse to my wife for buying the drive was to store the overflow of programs that wouldn't fit onto the 622 and delay upgrading to a 722 but then I found the Christmas upgrade special for $49 and ended up with the 722 and the hard drive. The drive came in handy to transfer all the programming from the 622 to the 722 and that made everyone happy. I bought the drive from newegg.com which had what I thought was a competitive price and the usual superfast delivery.

As a comparrison, I have had a simpletech 500gb drive for a little over a year now. It works OK but I found that it runs exteremly hot to the touch, so I only turn it on to backup my PC. The Buffalo drive runs with little heat and noise so I am very pleased.

I figured out my issue I posted yesterday and it's something I should have thought of first.

When I put the MyBook in my HT cabinet the supplied USB cable wasn't long enough to handle the spot where I wanted to put it. So, I grabbed a longer spare USB I had hanging around. I was then seeing intermittent issues writing to the HDD.

I moved the MyBook to another closer shelf, used the supplied USB cable, and voila, it works!! :o

I have had only a couple of problems with my Seagate 500g EHD. I unplug it when I get the error message and it works fine when I plug it back in. Installing an on-off switch would be a good idea and I will look at doing that. The other problem I have had is that with some recorded movies I can not stop them other than by using the "freeze" control. Then to start them I press the yellow "skip" button. Nothing else will work. But I can leave the movie and return to live TV or to the 622 recorded agenda. Then when I start the movie again it starts from the beginning. Also, when I fast forward a scene and then pause the film, it will start at an earlier place, not where I stopped. But this only happens with a movie now and then. Usually I erase it and record it again and then it works ok. The final and puzzling thing that has happened is when I restore the movie back to the 622. Sometimes, not always, it simply makes another copy. Then I have a copy of the movie I can play on my 622 and the Seagate. Kind of like when the Transporter in an old Star Trek episode made two copies of Captain Kirk.
But I really love my external drive. I have over 65 HD movies on it now.

Been running a my book 750gb for many months. Have about 500gb loaded. For the second time got the 855 error: "An error occurred while transferring events to your USB storage device". The first time I just gave up an deleted movie, thought fluke. I have since sucessfully archived other movies. Once again have gotten the 855 error. Tried resetting everything but without success. It so happens had purchased a second EHD. Using same wires, plugged in new device, formatted, rebooted. Moved movie without a problem to the new device. Now the only thing I can think of is that only recently I deleted stuff off the EHD. Makes me wonder how well fragmented space is being handled. Makes you wonder if we'll be seeing more of this has time goes on.
I restored the movie to the IHD (internal hard drive), still fails to archive to EHD. Noticed that about 1/3 of the movie has completed before it fails. Found a show a little less than that size and successfully archived. Then tried a show which was bigger than the estimated difference. It fails to archive about 960mb. EHD has about 218.5gb available. My guess is that it is trying to use the fragmented deleted space. Has anyone seen anything like this before? You might want to be cautious about deleting at this point. Another possibility is that it really can't use all of the 750gb. When a new 750gb is formatted it starts with about 697.4 available.

I had the same prblem with the 855 error and found that one recorded program was the problem and stopped the transfer process. I was trying to copy multiple programs and it crapped out at one particular point, so I tried watching the program on the 622 it was recorded to and got an error message that the recording had a problem. I deleted the one program and everyting has copied OK since then. Try to watch the program that won't copy and see if that is the problem. If so, delete it and see what happens - good luck!

I just saw that one today at Best Buy, marketed as a TIVO extender or something like that. Just the same drive I'd bet.

If you're referring to this, it's eSATA, not USB. I suppose then it can't be used with these ViP boxes (at least not without modifying them), right?

Sleep Mode off on Seagate has Worked Well...

All you would have had to do was turn it off/on.

Oddly enough that just would not seem to work. It did on occasion, but most of the time, especially the last two months or so, I would have to hard re-boot the DVR, unplug the USB drive, turn it off, then plug it all back in. But a alot of the time, even this did not work.

I can say that since I turned the sleep mode function off, it has worked without issue. It is just always there. It also saved me from throwing my HD out a window.

Does anyone know if USB Hub support works or if it is in the works to be supported? I would like to add another drive.

Thanks. This site is outstanding.
