External Hard Drive Archive Bug Thread

x 2, I received all of those error messages until I turned sleep mode off. Once I did, have not had a single issue since. So yes, my drive runs all of the time, and I feel it often for heat, and have not noticed any excessive heat issues. I know this is not the optimal situation, however, I am not about to power on and off over and over again just to be able to use the drive as it is a pain in the reat, plus, doing so is not great for the drive either. Until E* figures out a firmware upgrade to wake the FA drive from sleep mode, I will keep that mode shut off.

Mine doesn't stay on all the time. I have it connected to the switched outlet on my A/V receiver so it's only on when my TV is.

L488 - pause or stop during USB-HD play causes freeze

Yah, jump back and skip forward work fine. Thanks. This problem mysteriously disappeared overnight last night after 3AM auto-reboot, I guess. That even after a hard boot on my own. Geez... don'tcha just hate mysteries?

I have 2 of the standard 500GB Freeagent drives and once I turned off sleep mode I have had zero problems with them. Sounds like your drive has other problems.

Nightrider, how do I turn off the sleep mode? Maybe that will do it. It seems strange that when plugging it in, it should't be in sleep mode, I know there were instructions here but I searched the pages and can't find it. Thank you.

Just got my second WD My Book 500GB; I figured I would just keep one plugged in, and just swap out the usb cable on the back of the drive, but of course in the past six months, they have changed the connector on the drive, from a typical USB hub connector to a mini-USB connector.

But it works, just have to switch the usb cable at the receiver instead. And now, I have 1TB of storage. :D

I'm already halfway through my 2nd 500 GB Drive, I have 110 HD movies and events archived. If I'm still with Dish by the end of next year I'll probably go to some type of 1 or 2 TB Raid 5 solution.

2 Seagate 320 gig free agents 95% full(Movies,MHD/Rave, BSG's and Fireflys), 1 Maxtor 320 -99% full(Csi-Miamis and Cold Cases), 2 WD 320Gig My Books at 70%(1 HD Football, 1 NBC Series)... 1-500 gig ESATA hooked to my HR20 at 10% ;) (Sci-Fi HD) (No Major bugs with any of them...)

Just want to verify this, if I read the box right, the WD My Book Essential will turn itself off when I turn off my 622, meaning when the USB is off?
Neither the My Book or the 622 will ever be OFF unless you unplug them. My Book will go into sleep mode after a period of inactivity. USB is still active, just not doing anything.

Wouldn't that then cause problems? At least with the other drive I can manually turn off the sleeper mode using the software before connecting it to my 622?

No, better to in sleep or off than on constantly, IMO.

I understand that, but thought the Seagate sleep mode has caused problems, but if the WD My Book also has sleep mode, and it can not be turned off, wouldn't that be an even bigger problem?

I just had a Seagate 250gb from Bestbuy for one day, turned off the sleep mode, worked fine with my 622, but has to return it the next day because we decided to get the Toshiba laptop/WD My Book 320gb/Taxcut combo deal instead.

Absolutely not. Why would you think so? As said before, sleep is better than spinning all the time. Less wear and tear, less heat, etc. For clarification, the Seagate problem is a Seagate ONLY problem. In sleep mode, the 622/722 won't recognize that it is there. So, you have to restart it, or disable the sleep mode. It is not a problem with any other drive.

I see, I thought the problem was with "sleep mode", not Seagate specific.

Now if E* can update their HDDVR's so when we turn off the receivers the USB will go off (I know the receiver itself is still on), wouldn't that be perfect? From what I read at least the WD My Book will go on sleep mode when the USB is off.

For those with Ext. HDs and no power switch on the case, what are you doing? Leaving it on all the time? unplugging the power adapter? Came up with some toggle switch?

I don't want to always have to unplug the adapter since I have the Ext. HD tucked in my entertainment center real nice.

My older 250gb MyBook had a power button on the front. My newer 500gb doesn't have this option.

I put an inline thumb switch in the power cord where it exits my entertainment cabinet, makes a very simple on/off
