DISH is airing inappropriate ads on TV Land

As I said, the fact that it's on at 4:30am probably "allows" TV Land to show racier commercials. No doubt they pay (GGW) more too. Fact is though, Brady Bunch is rated G, (The Brady BunchTV Show – Videos, Actors, Photos and Episodes from the Classic Television Show – TV Land. So is I Love Lucy and it's on at 5am. So is Leave It To Beaver (also on at 5am). Someone (TV Land, Dish, etc) needs some common sense.

Oh come on.. Leave it to Beaver is just dying for a GGW commercial.. :)

One of the dirtiest things said on prime time came from Leave it to Beeaver.

Mrs Cleaver: "Ward, weren't you a little hard on the Beaver last night?" :p

Meh. How bout people stop worrying over 20 second commercial breaks and get some real parenting in? Just a thought... Attend a PTA conference, you'll feel better.

You miss the point. Sitting down with the family to watch a family oriented program is part of parenting. I am far (very far) from wanting government intervention or censorship, but it's not too much to ask that somewhat appropriate commercials be aired during these programs.

There's the point exactly.

A few points.....

1. You recorded programs that were airing when all the kiddies are supposedly asleep. The average viewer at that time is not interested in the latest Chinese toys from Mattel.

2. GGW may not exactly be high on the good taste meter, but their ads aren't pornographic. I've got two kids (a 13 yr. old boy and an 8 yr. old girl) with two PVRs, and the first thing I taught them was how to use the commercial skip button. They are so impatient with commercials that they don't give them a chance. I suggest you do the same.

3. We all whine about rates being too high, and the media companies keep jacking up the rates that we eventually must pay. If E* adds a bunch of ads and can make a few bucks to defrray expenses, more power to them. I just wish they had more variety (How many erectile dysfunction ads do we really need to see? - Where's KTel when you need them?)

4. Censorship sucks. I have children and "I" find it offensive that people want to turn the airwaves into a playground suitable for a 5 year old. I agree that TV Land is probably already pretty bland, and they may want to rethink the ads on THAT channel, but I'm wary of condemning E* for this practice. I see porn ads for E*'s adult channels (no visuals, just a breathy voiceover) on ESPN after midnight. I don't have an issue with that as they don't actually show anything. I also suggest you enable the parental controls on your receivers to protect against those items.

5. Finally, the world is constantly bombarding both kids and adults with different messages, some good, some bad. Take it as an opportunity to open a discussion. If you feel they are still too innocent, then say that the people on the ads were being silly. That seems to be the key word for my daughter. She wants nothing to do with looking silly, so the problem usually goes away pretty soon thereafter...

Sad part is, those people watching the Brady Bunch at 4am are some of the worst perverts, and are interested in Girls Gone Wild.

Hmm i thought that tv land came from its own provider and dish simply relays it.. i was not aware that dish inserts commercials? we were never trained on this ever and were always adviced to say that whatever the programmers put is what plays... wow this is interesting.. ill do some internal research, got some connections...

so let me get this straight.. lets say you hve tv land on direct tv....or cable?

and you put a dish network receiover side by side to the other company... they wont show the same thing as far as commercials?? I know mtv and most others is the exact same thing on the other providers (i had cable and dish at the same time)

interesting i say!!

Girls gone wild unltimate rush!! haha those are annoying.. they come out on cartoon network when adult swim is on... strange..
Ok let me give you an example as you have given us.

I'm on charter cable right now finishing up a bundle ( long story ) whenever I watch scifi during the commercials there will be some that start and go away in a split second to be replaced by another one thats sometimes but not always a local commercial, this is the service provider not the content provider slipping in a commercial inplace of the national one. You can see the same thing ota sometimes on the lower budget stations in your area.

Now in your example with cartoon networks adult swim I have never seen any commercials for GGW or its offshoots nor have I seen any commercials for the party chat lines as I am an avid watcher of adult swim now for 10 years in two diferent states and five diferent providers ( comcast, wow, dish, charter, directv ). On some of the local channels where Im at and a few low end cable channels this practice of inserting adds happens alot at night with ggw, qwest phone party lines and a rather disturbing add for a gay party line.

Ok so your calling me a pervert then because I'm up at 4am? I have a job that I get up at 3am to go to and on my days off I try to stick to this schedule and not have to struggle with going off and on a sleep schedule every week. Perverts dont care what time of the day it is, if they did then you wouldnt have the male of the species atacking girls on the way to school or the female of the species molesting the boys in schools.

No, but are you aren't up at 4am for the purpose of watching the Brady Bunch?
Imagine the men that actually are up that early in the morning and watch the Brady Bunch. That is the target for the commercials.

Are you basing this on any fact or just your feelings that if theres some guy up at 4am watching the Brady Bunch that he's a pervert and your doing this by trying to draw a conclusion that somehow the Brady Bunch has some kind of carnal pleasure for perverted men? Have you ever watched the Brady Bunch? This was a show that was one step shy of there being a bible on every table and Sunday school lessons taught on each episode, if anything this show is about as unsexy as they get.

I'll say this again, there are alot of people who get up early for work, anyone that works in Atlanta or Los Angeles for instance but lives outside the city knows how bad the traffic is to get into town, for Atlanta its so bad that it'll take you 3 hours to drive 25 miles during the afternoon rush hour so getting up early for work at 3 or 4 in the morning is not unheard of and in large metro area's is very common. Where is the heaviest concentration of cable and satellite viewers at also? In the metro's and thats the same area where your going to find the largest concentration of graveyard shift workers to and looking at the board here we have members who work the graveyard shift and are early risers so I guess that your calling all of us a bunch of perverts then.

Here's another spin.... Brady Bunch, Leave it to Beaver, I Love Lucy and so on are "good" (clean, innocent, etc) shows yet they're only shown at 3-5am in the morning on TV Land. What if I'd like for my kids to watch these shows instead of SpongeBob and the like ?

I still think the fact that these commercials are on after the "cut-off" time (after 10pm, midnight, ??) is the problem. No one is sure yet who's inserting them though. TV Land claims it's not them but all we need is for some D* and cableco customers to record a show from the channel from the middle of the night. I'm game....

Here you go:

4:30 AM Brady Bunch, The The Private Ear : TV-G
5:00 AM Leave It To Beaver Bachelor At Large : TV-G

I'll post in the D* forum to ask someone with them to record these.

No, but the people the GGW commercials are targetted to are.
Not all the people watching at 4am are angels. And since kids arn't up at 4am (at least shouldn't be) then the commercials certainly ain't targetted to them.

DVR's are not a consideration when commercials are inserted. Especially since most people with DVR's skip them. The only ones advertisers count on watching commercials are those watching live. And since most people watching at 4am are adult men, you get GGW videos, because they are bought by adult men, which is the demographic that is up that early.

And what person getting up at 4am to go to work in order to beat the traffic (did that myself when I lived in Santa Clara), is going to take time out to watch a sitcom?

I understand your points but in this instance nickelodeon is pointing fingers at Dish network and now it appears at Directv aswell as being at fault for the commercials being aired. With my current job I dont have the time to get up and eat a breakfast and watch the tv because of the hours I keep at work but in the past when I had to get up early for work I did watch tv while eating breakfast during the 5am time frame.

I would be under the impression that no recording device has ever been a consideration for any content provider or service provider but they know people use them. Still it does boil down to nickelodeons family oriented image that they like to wear proudly, if they are indeed airing these commercials themselves then what are they saying? " At Nickelodeon we proudly serve the whole family including that creepy uncle living in the basement"

Oh I did forget that there are kids who are up at 4am, there are parents who get the kids up that early to take to a sitter or early risers daycare, again a byproduct of living and or working in a large metro and anyone working at places such as where I work that starts shifts at 3 and 4 am.

I'm sure most parents try, but if I let my daughter watch Dora, should I have to sit with her in case there's an inappropriate commercial ? No, I should NOT. If a TV show is rated "G", the commercials should be too.

Brady Bunch is harmless but the fact that it's on in the middle of the night means the network can show "riskier" commercials because kids really aren't likely to be watching. Ten years ago, yeap, that was a safe assumption.... With DVRs to prevalent, it no longer is.
Good post Hall.

The "in your face" nature of tv ads (ie... Make Seven Up Yours) these days and the repetitive nature of them has continued to push me towards those channels that do not air ads or put them all together between shows. As well, I have begun collecting those old favorites that TvLand shows on DVD so that I can turn the tv off. The newest tv show seasons are now on DVD so quickly that I'm am almost ready to disconnect from the broadcast world. The dvr makes it alot easier to tailor tv watching on my schedule and skip the ads but DVD is even better. Plus I get extras and bonus material. Several families we are friends with feel the same way and we have started to build a library of material so that we can all keep the total costs down. Our own private NetFlix if you will.

As for the western world showing gratuitous nudity so what's wrong with the USA? Explain this one to me: The nations with the most nudity on regular tv also have the highest suicide rates.

When nudity is used to commercialize and turn humans into objects, life has less value and that's not how children need to be raised. It's not so much about what as it is about how.
