DISH Drops AMC Networks (AMC Back on DISH channel 131)

I just did an online chat and ended up with free Roku. I am on the Welcome Package, so I really didn't expect to get a credit. I had to transfer to an account specialist. 1st person claimed I didn't have AMC in my package. Said it would arrive in 3-5 days.

Also wanted to say that I'm only a Dish America subscriber as I'm on more of a budget at the moment just trying to pay other things off so the loss of AMC does not affect me. I do give DISH a ton of credit on this Roku offer, though. It may not solve the problem for all but I find it comforting that DISH at least cares enough to try to make this right for those affected. I give them props for that.

I can't see the idea of telling a co-worker (or anyone for that matter) that not getting one channel is an "embarrassment".

It's not missing the channel that's embarrassing, it's the situation that Dish has created.

As far as I am concerned, when companies like Dish and content providers like AMC behave like these two have and leave their customers in a situation like this they should be embarrassed.

I had no idea that people actual condone this stupidity

That's great, on welcome pack and you received it, good to hear dish must have something going on with Roku, sounds like they have given many away today

Nice to see Dish is honoring all those that had AMC in their package.

It is nice that Dish is offering a free Roku 2 XD streaming player but there is one enormous show-stopper problem with Roku for me...it does not have a digital audio output so I cannot connect it to my home theater audio system. Roku has an HDMI output which is fine if your audio home theater preamp/receiver has HDMI inputs but mine does not. Roku also has an analog audio output but you need digital audio (Toslink or coax) for DD 5.1 if you do not have HDMI inputs. I can't imagine why Roku designed their players without digital audio output.

Well it took forever over chat and there was some stalling, but I was given the $10 credit per month (I already have a Roku) plus something called a "$5 on-line bonus." I couldn't get a straight answer as to what that is and I can't view the offer yet since I have a tech. visit scheduled this week. Does anyone know what this is?

I have been getting an additional 5 dollar online bonus as a new customer when I signed up dish. Had to check off something online

I called the number that was provided in the email.

I have been with Dish for four or five years, I am subscribed to Top 250 and Starz. I am not under contract. I was able to get a $10 credit for the next 12 months and a Roku. The call took approximately 30 minutes.

I helped my grandmother also by calling the same number. She has been with Dish for over a decade. She is subscribed to Everything pack. She is under contract until December after she upgraded to HD. She was able to get a one-time $30 credit and a Roku. The call took approximately 10 minutes.

I don't understand Dish offering free Roku receivers though. When more and more people are starting to 'cut the cable', why are they showing their customers how easy it is and and show them how to save money? It is generous of them, but this is the sort of thing that can backfire easily. Dish talked about how by AMC devalued their programming by offering it via streaming services. Now Dish is devaluing their product by giving away an alternative to Dish and showing their customers how to watch most of the programming they offer on demand through Roku.

But, I also think it shows they never intended to truly negotiate, and were planning to drop these channels for good, all along.

I was offered $285 in monthly credits and a Roku. I accepted :) I do buy a bunch of programming from them and this was probably driving the "generosity". One of the offers appears to be crafted to battle churn, as it is $5/mo for 24 months.

I agree with Gary this seemed to be a direction DISH was going, come hell or high water...

It took forever on chat but Dish is sending me a Roku for free as well. I was not able to get the credits but that is OK with me.

EDIT: There was mention of a $3 per episode credit that maxed out at 10 (so $30 total) but I assume the Roku is in place of that. Maybe I will get both. I am under contract and upgraded to a Hopper in March (or whenever it was released).

I guess there is power in the email number, I best call it and see what I can do. I have no real qualms about losing AMC. There was programming there I watch regularly, but knew I always had a back up for those. I think what DN is doing to compensate is fair, and it means they do realize there is a still some strong interest in some of the AMC programming provided. Does not mean the network was in anyway worth their inflated subscription rate.

Cool. If that's what it is, then I'll be getting $180 off for the coming year! This is how you build loyalty among customers who are paying attention.

Good on Dish.

I'll never use the one they're sending me. I've never used NetFlix, HULU, Amazon Instant Video, or any other streaming services. I do have an XBox 360, PS3, and FreeAgent HD Theater+, all of which offer the same capabilities of the Roku. Many standalone Blu-ray players have these "apps" included. And lets not forget modern "smart TVs" have them as well.

As far as the absence of a TosLink port...While perusing Roku's models, I noticed the absence of a digital audio port as well. My guess is that they have 2 targets:

  1. Low-end user with an HDTV and no AV Receiver. This user is interested in simplicity and ease of setup and connection. The addition of an optical or digital coax would just add one more step of complexity to said user. The Roku basically makes their "non-smart" HDTV into a "smart" HDTV.
  2. Higher-end user with an AV Receiver with HDMI switching. This user appreciates the simple elegance and small form-factor.

I'm a bit surprised the higher models (XD and XS) even have an analog port.

Looks like they are still on, on UVERSE

Is AT&T suing DISH?

So you take as Gospel what AMC says. (And please note I specifcially said I don't either believe or disbelieve it, so I am not blindly discounting it, but with Uverse also dropping them, there's more than just VOOM) Also don't forget there was a third small carrier who was in dispute over the exact same thing, increase being asked for.

Funky DISH Lovin' Dude, you are the pot calling the kettle black. Is Charlie a God?

If this was all about carriage fees, they would not have announced the replacement of the AMC family of channels with crap some of us subs already have. Carriage fee disputes are not something new, but the way DISH has been handling this one, IS new.

And can you say Roku? Its not Christmas.
:)

I don't follow that. The Karma is AMC just lost any access to millions of subscibers on two carriers. For the sake of argument, if it's over VOOM, was it worth it? (Yes I know, hardly any of them actually did watch anyway)

Karma is on AMC's side -- they have a deal with AT&T.
;)

Charlie said the loss from the lawsuit would be "substantial" to DISH. DISH paid AMC at most $40 million/year, although I am sure it was much less. Multiply that by 20 years and it might begin to total what DISH is going to lose in this lawsuit. Charlie knows he is going to pay through the nose, and I suppose he feels he won't be paying twice if he drops AMC and screws his subs.

As has been said already, lets see what the next quarterly numbers say.

I just called the 888 number. After some delay they gave me a $2.00 X 10 episode credit for missing Breaking Bad and said they would adjust again for later series if the dispute wasn't resolved. I have the AEP and don't know if that played in their action.

Guess that would be cheaper than losing subs.

I didn't receive the email, but for sheets and giggles, I called the 888 number and the CSR I first spoke to was in denial. First of all, I have the AT200 with BB@H. I have had HDNET & HDNMV and the CSR tried to tell me that we never had either of those channels in our package. Can't see how that could be, considering I have been watching Dan Rather Reports & HDNET World Report on Tuesdays for over a year. He then said there is no offer for the episode credit. I asked for loyalty.
Loyalty lady made it a point to mention we have referred about a couple dozen people over the last year, claimed the credit/episode offer was non-existent, and ended up offering us $10/month credit for 6 months, and a free Roku.

She also said that AMC & DISH are still in negotiations.

At least DISH is attempting to make up for their mistake.
