DISH, DirecTV to merge?

First of all, a merger is not happening.

But if it did, then this would be the only logical step.

Also all new customers would get a Dish to pick up 99/101/103/110/119 which would essentially be a slimline dish with a modified LNB to get all transponders at 110/119.

I think the key would to phase out 128 since that slot is being leased.

Then the question is do they continue to use that nagravision garbage or Directv’s encryption system.

I agree a merger is unlikely, but I'd never say never. I think the more likely scenario is Dish picking up more DTV changeover subscribers as AT&T winds down the service. If it should happen, phasing out 129 would be likely as you said, but I'd think there would also be an effort to consolidate the services to the minimum number of western arc satellites possible to cut costs. The redundant sats could be leased out for other services and perhaps transferred to Echostar to manage. The eastern arc sats would likely be left alone. There's interesting times coming, any way we look at it...

The truth is Charlie/Dish is seeking to merge with Directv, buy simply converting all Directv's current and former customers to Dish.
With the exception of one certain Michigan dealer, whom Dish still owes a couple of million dollars too.

I'd think the eastern arc decision was made to extend the locals capacity as the full LIL was implemented. As it is, the eastern arc has made dish available to many more subscribers that had no LOS to the full western arc. As far as the Detroit DMA goes, are you saying there is no one in that region that suffers from a blocked LOS to 129? I didn't think so. There are a number of DMA's with HD locals on both arcs, but I have no idea how those decisions are made.

Our upstate NY cottage is in a similar situation except our HD locals are EA only. We can easily see the full EA, but only see the 110 bird on the WA.

I thought the reason was that they just didn't have enough capacity on 110/119/129 for all the HD local's the they needed to carry. Yes, having EA allowed them to solve some view issues but they had been doing OK business wise with just 110/119 and 61.5 before then.

For the same reason Atlanta, Augusta, Austin, Baton Rouge, Beaumont, Birmingham, Charlotte, Chicago, Cleveland, Dallas, Des Moines, Ft Meyers, Ft Wayne, Gainesville, Grand Rapids, Houston, Huntsville, Johnstown/Altoona, Joplin, Kansas City, Lafayette, Lincoln, Mankato, Memphis, Minneapolis/St Paul, Mobile, Pensacola, Nashville, New Orleans, Norfolk, Odessa/Midland, Omaha, Orlando, Panama City, Peoria, Pittsburgh, Raleigh/Durham, Richmond, Rockford, Savannah, Sherman/Ada, St Louis, Tallahassee, Tampa, Topeka, Waco, West Palm Beach, Wichita Falls/Lawton, and Youngstown are all on both arcs in HD plus the dual arc DMA's in SD. It might be because adding the locals to the EA gained enough subscribers to justify it, but not enough to justify switching the existing subscribers over to the EA. Whatever the reason for it, it was decided by people with more need to know than either of us.

Wait a minute here. I think SiriusXM is still operating both Sirius tech and XM tech in parallel. So how would your argument for a complete transition apply?

They are. But they are now pushing SiriusXM branded tech that essentially uses the Sirius platform. The biggest hold up was that car companies had exclusive deals with either company. I own Hondas, and Honda's deal was with XM.

Such as shame as when they were separate companies, XM was known to have better technology, where Sirius had the stronger programming. That can be mostly attributed to the NFL and Howard Stern. I personally chose XM. I was a bigger Opie and Anthony fan, and XM had the NHL and MLB.

I am confused. I have Sirius XM in my 2014 Honda Odyssey. I just assumed that Sirius and XM had combined. Are you saying I only have XM and not Sirius even though it says Sirius XM? If so, how do I tell which one I have?

That is a very good question. I believe all radios have "SiriusXM" on them these days. But very few actually have both kinds of tuners inside. Usually it's one or another.

Edited to add: I vaguely recall Scott telling me to tune to a certain channel number. If it was there, it's XM, and if it was not, it's Sirius. Of course I don't remember the channel number.
