Folks, for those with D* switches... are they installed outdoors or indoors? Does it matter how far the switch is from the dishes or should the minimum cable lenght be the goal?

Cheers,K

Thanks for the tips, I thought those were weather proof. I'll do my best to shield it. As for wiring lenght, is there a rule of thumb, or any reasonable lenght goes?

Your RF (IF) will disappear way before the DiSEqC or USALS commands do. So no, there's no modification of the 'length' just because DISEqC is added.

in the old days they used to ship with plastic caps for the unused ports.Water will get in any unused ports that are aimed upwards.
They are designed to be mounted as close to the dish as possible and it would make no sense to mount them indoors. You would have to run 4 coax lines all the way to the house.

"In the old days" wasn't that long ago. Just a few years (3?) ago I bought a bunch of Chieta switches from one of the many sources out there and they all came with clear plastic caps. But maybe it was 5 years ago? And maybe it was old stock? Or worse yet, ....maybe I paid too much?

At any rate whenever I get those plastic caps I save them.

I thought it was like 10 years ago the last time I saw them.(2004)
The old magnum or skyview receivers were famous for blowing the power supply if you plugged a tv into the loop out by mistake,I used to use those caps as a condom on the loop out to prevent that.

Very good idea! I'll file that away...

I have two switches, one is out on my C-Band dish outside, the other is inside right behind my receiver. The cable length to my C-Band dish is 50 ft.

I use this type of plastic cover. It seems to protect the switch well.

Looks good.. but what is it?
looks like plastic to protect Identifications or Folders
How you insert the cable to the switch ports?

I am also looking something "cheap" , "practical" and "secure" to protect my switchs
