When I got DirecTV, you didn't have to buy the receivers and install it yourself.

When we bought our boxes and did it ourselves there was no contracts no promos

It was also lot easier to install a dish as you only had to aim for the 101 slot, so there was no setting a tilt or dithering.

After Para Todos launched on 119 and the Jade World/Cantonese package launched on 110, along with HD, and DIRECTV started adding full LIL service via spotbeams, professional installation became the norm.

I remember back in ‘96 when my dad installed an RCA DirecTV dish and receiver, I was like 6 or 7 and seeing Cartoon Network’s early days was pretty awesome. We recorded a lot of ppv movies to VHS back then…….
