Why direct them to Satellite when it will be gone by 2034? Same with installing DTV via the Net or DTV Stream would be easier.

Because 2034 is not a hard date, and is also 11 years in the future. That's like Ford deciding to quit selling all gas powered cars today because they plan to have an all electric fleet by 2035.

Im trying to figure out why they are separating byod vs using their box
It's in this part of document:

"As DIRECTV’s Marketing teams have learned more about the STREAM customer base, they’ve seen different behaviors and values between those who are BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) DIRECTV STREAM customers and those who have DIRECTV STREAM using the Osprey Device. STREAM with Device customers are often coming from a Cable provider, and they’re looking for a service that aligns with what they’ve had in the past, with similar pricing/offers, but with a better experience overall."

Unified DIRECTV Brand – Launching April 6, 2023

Overview

DIRECTV is streamlining the brand to create a simpler and more seamless customer experience.

In the current state today, DIRECTV’s products are divided by their method of delivery: DIRECTV is a Satellite product and DIRECTV STREAM is a Streaming product.

As DIRECTV’s Marketing teams have learned more about the STREAM customer base, they’ve seen different behaviors and values between those who are BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) DIRECTV STREAM customers and those who have DIRECTV STREAM using the Osprey Device. STREAM with Device customers are often coming from a Cable provider, and they’re looking for a service that aligns with what they’ve had in the past, with similar pricing/offers, but with a better experience overall.

New Unified Brand

To solve for the needs of these customers and to create a more unified DIRECTV brand, as of April 6, 2023, Device customers will both fall under the “DIRECTV” Brand. DIRECTV Satellite will become a sub-brand called, “DIRECTV via SATELLITE”, and DIRECTV STREAM with Device will become a sub-brand called, “DIRECTV via INTERNET.”

BYOD STREAM customers will stay with the “DIRECTV STREAM” brand.

With the rebrand, DIRECTV (both via SATELLITE & via INTERNET) will align in price, they’ll both come with a 2-year price protection for 24 months, and they’ll both offer an included device for the customer at no additional cost.

One major benefit with Satellite is that there is still a larger variety of content available, and more channels available for the same price. The customer channel lineups will be available online for the customer to compare. Sales agents will also receive training that there is more content available via SATELLITE.

DIRECTV STREAM for BYOD will continue to be a month-to-month offer as it is today. DIRECTV via INTERNET will also be month-to-month, but will offer a new price lock for 24 months.

What Customers Can Expect – As of April 6

New Customers with Equipment

  • Customers ordering any type of DIRECTV service with equipment will experience one DIRECTV ‘umbrella’ brand.
  • There will continue to be two technology delivery options for DIRECTV service.
  • Based on the type of technology delivery method, service will be called via SATELLITE or via INTERNET.
New Customers Without Equipment (BYOD)

  • New customers that do not order DIRECTV service with equipment (BYOD) will be directed to com for the DIRECTV STREAM service.
  • DIRECTV equipment gives customers the BEST experience & customers should only be referred to directvstream.com after DIRECTV via SATELLITE and/or DIRECTV via INTERNET have been offered as a solution.
Existing Customers

  • Existing DIRECTV STREAM customers with & without a DIRECTV STREAM device will continue with services under the DIRECTV STREAM name for now.
  • Account management functions on com will continue.
Will the Satellite version have a 2-year agreement, or be month-to-month as well

Scott Greczkowski, will DIRECTV via Internet also have the same channels as DIRECTV via Satellite?

Satellite will continue to have a two year agreement. DirecTV via Internet *could* have an agreement, as they state it will have a two year price guarantee and hardware included. DirecTV BYOD will not have an agreement.

The channel lineup will still have fewer channels on streaming and look the same as it does today. Key example is NFL Network is on satellite but not on streaming, and until their agreement comes up for renewal that is not likely to change. Other lower viewed channels, west coast feeds, informercial, etc. - those are likely just a business decision that they are not available on streaming.

I posted the differences previously but here it is again

yes the NFL Network

So going through the list of Stream vs Sat for the Entertainment package stream does not have (besides the mentioned NFL Net, music channels, religious, knock off shopping)

BYU TV (but BYU TV has their own app)
Any station that has a West station
MavTv
NASA

but on the chart on the D* site they say A&E, Lifetime, History and Vice are not in Entertainment on satellite

Choice has the same channels in both

Looks like they are doubling down on what people hate about Traditional Pay Live TV, Stream for new subs adding a.$15 per month box fee and a RSN fee of $13.99, along with a 2 year contract.

from DirecTV’s site-for two years. After 2 years, prevailing prices apply. Additional Fees & Taxes: Price excludes Advanced Receiver Service Fee of $15/mo. (which is extra and applies to all packages) and Regional Sports Fee of up to $13.99/mo. (which is extra & applies to CHOICE package or higher) and certain other add’l fees & charges

What's really interesting - if someone really wants the DirecTV box experience, they could signup for BYOD and get used/refurb boxes elsewhere and just login. The idea of charging a $15 advanced receiver fee on the streaming option is an aggressive profit improvement opportunity. No contract on the new "DirecTV via Internet", but they do require the return of the free Gemini box (first box free) if you cancel, or repay the $120. Additional boxes you have to pay the $120 and you own them. Not showing the option to buy refurb boxes for $50 anymore either.

DirecTV via Internet vs. DirecTV BYOD - Emphasis on profit improvement program?

What is most interesting is that new satellite customers appear to now get a Gemini box option, which is not very long after they started customer testing of this box for satellite clients.

Reading into the details, default config is still HR54 and clients (based on the text of 200 hour recording DVR)

If you select to get the Gemini free upgrade on your first TV, you get HS17 (based on the text of 450 hour recording DVR and "free wireless upgrade" and one Gemini.
If you add additional TVs, you get wireless clients - unless you pay $49 per TV "Gemini upgrade fee".

They stopped charging $99 to upgrade to the Genie 2 (wireless upgrade fee) but replaced it with a $49 upgrade fee per Gemini client.

They still have the two active Mini's requirement to get a Gemini.

They still have the two active Mini's requirement to get a Gemini.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and guess that's because they don't have enough Geminis to replace all the Minis and don't want to render perfectly good Minis useless since it sounds like new installs will be all Gemini - if so the ones that are returned wouldn't be re-used.

No doubt they'll relax the requirement eventually.
