Its may never actually work as advertised but it will get deployed

last i read they were getting the 1gbps speeds they wanted, max distance was 2km
foilage, building ect blocked the signal

@ 2km thats alot of new cell towers

I just read something today where they said they were getting gigabit speeds at only 300 meters, and then it was iffy if there was anything more substantial than a window in the LOS path - otherwise it was closely to 100 meters. They'll need a LOT of micro-towers if the distance limit is that small.

I found AT&T's 5g test results and the test results in Kalamazoo, MI interesting.

How 2 Years of 5G Trials is Preparing Us for Commercial Deployment

Kalamazoo, Michigan
Participants: Small businesses

  • Observed no impacts on 5G mmWave signal performance due to rain, snow or other weather events.
  • Learned mmWave signals can penetrate materials such as significant foliage, glass and even walls better than initially anticipated.
  • Observed more than 1 Gbps speeds under line of sight conditions up to 900 feet. That’s equal to the length of 3 football fields.

That's a funny way of looking at it just like how Millennials look at the old tech that their parents used. They would eventually say why did their parents need a cable wire or dish to watch TV. One thing I don't get is why Millennials like watching TV on a small screen especially movies?
Trust me I’m 24 and have tried watch tv on my iPhone and I can’t do it, I need my flat screen with directv please!!!

Cable subscriptions are dropping for a variety of reasons..eventually it won't be cost effective to launch new satellites..just like every other hot new technology..it peaks and slowly fades awsy

I think we will have satellite for quite sometime. Cable has the advantage of also offering internet so I see it going nowhere for now as well

Would another way to look at 5g is how are they going to deploy it? Will 5g replace FTTN and FTTH or will it be a combo of upgrading all the FTTN areas to FTTH use that in addition to 5g in the cities and also have 5g in the rural areas?

Weren’t they touting 10Gbs real world speeds? And some fantasy of 100Gbs one day?

The current way programs are delivered is changing..channels will disappear while programs will be on demand

So do you think AT&T and maybe all TV providers want to get rid of live TV and go VOD only, except for 24 hour news and live sports. If so, how would that work? Would they be just like Netflix and negotiate for all the prime-time shows? Wouldn't TV going VOD only get expensive if AT&T and other TV provider didn't get certain prime-time shows and you would have to subscribe to other network streaming services and that could end up costing the same as SatelliteTV or Cable TV subscription?

You would buy what you want..on a per show basis
