Agreed! Personally, I am still waiting for D*, E* and Cable to put some "real" HD back into their HD lineups. 3D is just a gimmicky waste of time and bandwidth in my opinion.

Just wondering:

Do 3D Channels consume more bandwidth than a normal HD channel? Do they broadcast in only 1080p?

Ridiculous. DirecTV should try "competing" with cable and FIOS in the HD realm first. The day they can match the average company on non-sports HD channels, such as premiums, Travel Channel, AMC, ID HD, Tru HD, etc., is the day I won't care if they waste resources on this garbage. I really don't see this "3D with glasses / hey, go buy a new 3D TV in this economy" thing taking off.

3D is not for me, constant headache, I will not be suprised if we'll hear some links to brain tumors later.
3D = SD on steroids.
That said, I am not against it, if somebody wants it and somebody wants to provide it - so be it. I'll just pass:-)

The next move in TV always prods all the other services to improve their offerings. Whether or not we as individuals care much for this, it just means that other services will have to get better. Perhaps this will force more channels and more providers to get more HD or fall by the wayside.

Agree. I'm guessing for me, I'll enter this mkt in 10 yrs? My Panny Plasma and DTV HD upgrade is still only 1.5 yrs old as it is.

How do you guys think, if any, this impacts available space on D12 for us "dinosaur" viewers that want more 2D HD channels?

Will the 3D channels show up in our Guide menus for our existing HD boxes?

Wow, ok, so much 3d hate around here! ..anyway, I want ESPNU HD first also and i'm sure it will come but I for one am glad for the ESPN 3D. I just bought a new TV last September and I am not in the market for a new TV either, but I think the technology will be really cool eventually when I buy one. I think this is the first step to greater 3D options down the road....I for one say "Thank you D* for going into the next realm of TV viewing."

I guess next will be the 3D Blue Ray players, and then the Porn Industry would probably start going into production to provide “Blue Ray - 3D Content”. :D

I understand the Masters (next week) will be available on some Cox systems in 3D. Beware, where VHS and DVD intros were strong and HD was a gradual transition. as CEA's president stated 12 years ago, HDTV is just the tip of the iceberg. Beware of an avalanche.:D

Couldn't agree more.

I would rather have ESPN trying to improve on their current HD channel rather than adding a 3D channel....for .003 population who currently have the proper for 3D viewing

:up

Couldn't agree more but the die-hards never will.

Comcast will have the Masters in 3D according to the commercial I just saw during NCIS. Looks like they are getting the jump on DirecTV. As a DTV customer, I'd just like some more HD. Comcast is serving up more HD in April, too. It sort of takes the wind out of DTVs sail. If I lived where I could get cable TV, I'd have to seriously look at it due to DTVs lack of a commitment to national HD programming at this point.

like always DN users feel the huge threat once again with their comments lol.
Gotta love this, its always fun to read all the negativity specially when their provider is not doing this first. And you know this MANNNN.

Probably because the 3D feed is from the WC pool and it will also be broadcast in 3D worldwide.... (to those countries that can support it)

Sky Sports has broadcast a couple of matches in 3D to pubs already and has one scheduled for this weekend as well.

I do agree that the ratio:

total direct tv subscriber pool to World Cup viewers to 3D TV owners = less than 100 viewers

it does give ESPN a bit more press coverage leading into the WC
Irrelevant what the rest of the world watches as far as ESPN is concerned, as ESPN is a US channel.
