DirecTV price increases coming in March

Another year, another $3/month down the drain. Time to cut service again.

As far as the price increase with Directv, I fully expected it to happen and even with Dish Networks $8 Price increase on some package, Dish network is still cheaper when you figure in multi-room receivers because your not paying $5 for the 2nd or 4th room.

That's a valid point as long as the 2nd or 4th rooms don't have a HDTV in then, why would you want to use a NTSC signal on a HDTV set?

The way E* does MRV is one of the reasons why I don't have E*. I want each room to have their own tuners and hard drive instead of sharing between the two rooms. Not to mention the fact that I can't lease more than 4 tuners.

It's a bad idea to raise prices in this economy, especially for something that's considered a luxury like satelitte service. ANY increase could lead to people canceling their subscriptions.

I agree, I dont think its a good idea. Im on the fence about the $29.99 pack. Not because I cant afford itm but because I watch 90% OTA.

Which costs D* more, eating the $3 this year or people dropping down to a lower plan? Someone like me goes from a $+50/mo plan to $29.99, its a hit for them.

Its official folks...

I just got the following from DirecTV

Its really sad that I have an old grandfathered package with add ons for DVR fee, hd fee and 2HD DVrs and one legacy reciever and cannot find a new package that comes out cheaper than carrying the old one with add ons. Makes no sense. Also makes no sense that there isnt a Premier/HD/DVR package. Stupid really. Even more absurd is that I have to call in to do any changes or lose my old package.

V,
I do the same thing, it seems like they add all the garbage into the TC+ package with the DVR and HD fee and it comes out to be just about the same price , with in a few dollars ... now I would have understood them changing the format when they did a few years back to the new packages with the extra items and giving the new price point, had they not removed a few channels when they did that...
that said, I don't even remember what channels are missing from the TC+ tot the HD DVR package. Must not be to substantial ,, then again, I would not miss them due to still having the TC+ package.

Yea better read the fine Print! DVR service hasn't been in the Premier pack in over 2 years.
I'll pay $102.99 for the Everything pack with E* and that includes all 5 of my DVR's. Plus about 8 more Premiums channels. But atleast you still get 30 RSN's:rolleyes:
And the particular package and setup I have is cheaper than the comparable package with Dish. Plus Dish does not offer my #1 reason for paying for service to begin with, EI. The point being, there is a reason why you chose Dish and I chose Direct. I am glad there are these differing options available for differing taste and differing setups.

I dont subscribe to them, but premuims going up a buck. Sports pack up a buck too, not enough on any of preimums to invest that each month

I also see that HD pack is now 10.00, I know its only a penny but now we are in double digit land

This is happening with DirecTV once a year now—and in the month of March. It's now a routine. But I do wonder whether people will start getting rid of service. This economy is the perfect opportunity for quite a number to say, "Can't afford you no more. But I can live without you." This is not only addressing DirecTV but also any provider of cable programming where it's now an annual schedule of pricing increases.

Directv has gone up in March every year since the beginning from what I recall ...
Did you think the price would stay the same all along ?

You should know that this price increase happens every year at this time by now, it part of running a business.

Not really, because the retailers are going to push the DVR's the same as they did last year.

There are a few who will opt to save a few dollars by not getting a DVR, but look at the take rate on Top100 DVR advantage, its still very high.

The no phone line fee is now waived on the first DVR receiver

Don't you still pay a DVR fee for each DVR you have with E* ?
That alone would burn me, the $5 for each addl. rec for D* I can deal with seeing I don't have the addl. dvr fee.

Jimbo

Any particular reason why?

Let me give you an example. In my living I have my main HDTV. In the den I do a SDTV in there. So not an issue there. However, the SD DVR in my den is used primarily by my daughters. And they are constantly recording multiple shows and they keep that DVR nearly full all the time. On my HD DVR I do lots of recording and always have lots of recorded shows to catch up on. I also have stored all 6 Star Wars recorded from Max HD. Until Lucas puts out Blu-Ray versions, this is the best version of these movies I can get a hold off. They are in OAR with no channel bugs. Those 6 movies take a fairly large chunk of my available hard drive space.

So with all of the recording going on with these TVs and the amount of stuff on the hard drives, I would be limited with what I could do if those two rooms had to share tuners and hard drive.

There a similar situation with my other HDTV that's in my bedroom. It would be shared with one of my daughters bedroom DVRs and the same problem would occur there since their bedroom DVRs are nearly full with recorded stuff and get constant use.

A resounding NO! The annual price increases began around the same time that Rupert Murdoch assumed control of DirecTV...and even though he may be gone now, the tradition is continuing.

DirecTV did a great job holding the line on prices during the early years of my subscription. My programming package even decreased in price by at least a dollar one year, after a restructuring of their packages.

Personally, I'm fed up with annual increases. Where does it end?

Well, they cant go up by $3 every year, within 10 years noone could afford any packages.

More reasoning to consider a TivoHD and OTA only. Im currently switching to Verizon DSL, so Ill have access to ESPN360.

Yes Dish's DVR fees are per receiver. These fees really erase any price advantage Dish has. They need a one DVR fee that covers all the DVR's on you account.
