Following up on my earlier post:
DirecTV has crazy retention deals right now
Quick recap, current bill:
XTRA package, 2 receivers, no pay channels.
$78.84 (after $50 discount)
A few weeks ago they added another $60/mo discount (no contract) that will show up on my next bill.
So, my contract is up and I called back to see if they would apply any other discounts to replace the $50/mo that just expired. Surprisingly they added an additional $20/mo discount (no contract) so, a total of $80/mo discount, no contract that would bring my monthly bill to $43.82 + tax.
Then I called back to simply verify the discounts / price with no contract -- verified ok. But, the guy also offered ANOTHER $30/mo discount, but this one required 12/mo contract. I was seriously thinking I'd cancel regardless but, that would bring my monthly bill to $13.82 + tax!! Insane!!
I understand that the XTRA package will increase $7 more in January, but even after that, the monthly cost $20.82 + tax (just over $22/mo) is way less for the same channels than any streaming service. I didn't take the extra $30 discount but I'm seriously thinking about it. I don't really want the 12/mo contract and the whole pixelation / rain fade thing sucks. But $22/mo is enticing and I've been fairly pleased with DTV for many years.
On the streaming side, I've been using PS Vue and have been really pleased with that. There's a couple channels it doesn't have that XTRA does have (not super important to me) and PS Vue bill is $48.70. I'd really love to support the streaming services but the ultimate goal is lower, more reasonable prices for TV. I don't want the streaming services to fail because then everyone just kills all discounts and we're back to where we were a year ago. Decisions, decisions..
Oh well, I guess the point is they're just about giving the service away to retain customers and put up a fight against cord cutting.
