So I'd like to upgrade my current HDDVR (its a HR20-700) to a HR24 - basically for aesthetic purposes.
Would directv issue an account credit if I bought it from an independent seller?

I've done this type of thing before.
You're stuck once you buy it because you must activate it. I would suggest that it is better to negotiate up front while you aren't committed to activating. What's the best way to go about it? Call and tell them I'm thinking about doing that, get the go ahead and buy the thing and they issue the credit after I activate the new receiver?

If you're off commitment, there's probably a better chance you can work something favorable out.
Thanks, good to know.

Yeah, I'm well out of commitment and haven't utilized too many credits so hopefully I can work something out.
In terms of size (small) and speed (fast - clearly) is the HR24 my best bet?
I had used my free equipment upgrade offer and DTV shipped me an old refurbished HR21, which I already have. So when calling to get a return label, I asked the rep about getting a credit if I buy the HR24. She had already mentioned Solid Signal as an option, and then got authorization from her supervisor to give me a $100 credit on my bill once I call to activate the HR24. So I thought that was nice of them. I ordered the HR24 through Solid Signal yesterday and 2 hours later, got a shipping notice and it arrives tomorrow. Can't wait to check it out and see the speed improvements. Very happy with the fast turnaround of my order. I'll keep them in mind if I need to add another device down the road.
Oh yeah, definitely. The previous rep put the agreement in the notes and when I call to activate to just tell them to check the notes she had.Make sure to remind D* about the credit when you call to activate it.
