Hi everyone. GREAT site. I've learned A LOT from you all.

I'm using my old DirecTV/PC dish connected to a Pansat 2700a.
I've been able to hit three satellites but I can't get the one I want.

I've gotten
Nimiq 2/3 82.0W 127.5 114.1 and
Nimiq 1/4i 91.0W 137.8 124.3
I also got an Echo star but I dont' remember which one

But what I really want is
IA-5 97.0W 145.8 132.4

What I don't know is if the problem is that I just can't hit the right spot or that my LNBR can't get it.

The Nimiq's are at 11250.

When I change it to 10750 for IA-5 and look for the satellite I can't find it.
Do I need to get a different LNBR? It gets the Nimiqs fine so I know that I can gets some FTA. GOALTV! Yea!

Also my DirectV/PC has two LNBRs right next to each other. I've only ever been able to get any signal from the one I got the Nimiq on.

I've read a lot of stuff on this board and others that have helped me get this far and I REALLY, REALLY apperciate the information. I'd like to hit this one since that was the one I orgininally out the Pansat for. (I read about this in MAKE magazine and was thrilled I could use my old dish)

Thanks!

I use a DirecPC dish also :)

Use the linear LNBF, that will be the one in the middle of the dish (Collecting most signal)

Use 10750 as the LNB Freq (L.O.)

Then start pointing the dish using a LIVE transponder from IA-5

Linear signals are harder to find than the much stronger DBS satellites!

Thank you SO much!! PSB and Das Hammer!

:) :eureka
Your info about Linear vs. circular and which LNBR to use was right on the money! I just nailed IA-5!!! I'm so thrilled.

One question. Now that I know that the center LNBR is a linear and the one off to the side is the Circular LNBR where do I look in the lyngSat look up to tell which bird is which? Is it based on the frequency? Is there something that says "This is a linear signal and this is a circular signal?"

For example next I want to hit Galaxy 10R at 123.0°W They have more FTA in English. I especially want to get NBC Eastcoast feeds (we have TERRIBLE reception of NBC in SF )
and then AMC 4 & DirecTV 1R/4S/8 at 101.0°W that appears to have some EC feed of other channels.

Again, that you SOOOOO much. Not quite as exciting as when I got my first signal, but thrilling non the less.

Basically, any Echostar (except for 105w and 121w) will be circular. Also, any Nimiq (ExpressVu) will be circular, as well as any DirecTV except for 95w (international). However, you cannot receive ANYTHING from DirecTV FTA (they use a different MPEG stream, not compatible with DVB).

You will pick up FTA from AMC-4 (which is in the same orbital position as DirecTV's core satellite), and you would use a linear LNBF for AMC-4.

Thanks Tron and PSB. I haven't checked out GNF movies yet but I will. I cracked up watching Everyone Loves Raymond with Farsi (?) subtitles on one station.

I think about all the new terms and techniques (practically a whole new language) that I had to learn to get this and then I tuned into a world where there were dozens of actual languages I DON'T speak.

The world is a big place, but in a way it seemed a lot calmer watching people from other countries' soap operas, diaper commercials and silly game shows. On the day after the thwarted attacks it made me feel MORE in common with people around the world. And that, to my mind, is a good thing.
