If you read the arstechnica article, whoever did this in Egypt knew what he was doing.
Nobody used an ax to cut the fiber connecting to the outside world...

I wouldn't bet in the US (if this ever happens) it will be just as sober a decision.
And even that would not be a problem if many TLDs (top level domains) wouldn't be located in the US...
