HOUSE and LOST gain from DVR viewership

Nielsen Research released the following press release today:

'House' and 'Lost' Show Greatest Gains From DVR Playback, Nielsen Reports

"The Office" Has Highest Gain on Percentage Basis

NEW YORK, April 25 -- The Nielsen Company today released the first look at the most "timeshifted" broadcast network television programs in the U.S., with FOX's House and ABC's Lost showing the most lift in audience due to playback with a Digital Video Recorder (DVR) within seven days of its initial airing.

For the week of April 2 - April 8, the most recent week for which ratings for seven-day playback are available, House pulled in an additional 2.74 million DVR viewers after its April 3rd airing, while Lost pulled in an additional 2.47 million viewers after its April 4th episode. The April 3rd episode of American Idol on FOX was third with 2.45 million viewers.

On a percentage basis, The Office had the highest gain in viewing with DVR playback, increasing viewership by more than 31%.

Starting immediately, The Nielsen Company will make this ranking available to media reporters every Monday on its online Press Room.

"American Idol" raised money for charity Wednesday night, but the giving mood didn't extend to the ratings.

Per usual, FOX dominated the night with a 15.4 rating/24 share. CBS finished a distant second at 6.4/10. ABC, 4.4/7, came in third, and NBC took fourth with a 4.0/6. The CW drew a 2.3/4.

FOX also ruled the adults 18-49 demographic with a 10.0 rating. ABC, 2.7, edged CBS, 2.6, for second place. NBC came in at 1.9 and The CW at 1.5.

It may look like April outside, but on your TV it's May Sweeps, which was good news for CBS and ABC on Thursday.

Overall, CBS averaged a 9.9 rating/16 share to win the night, beating ABC's 8.6/14. FOX was a distant third with a 4.7/8, followed closely by NBC's 4.6/8. The CW trailed with a 2.4/4.

Among adults 18-49, though, ABC averaged a 5.2 rating and captured the key demographic. CBS wasn't far off, though, with a 4.8 rating. NBC moved up to third with a 3.2 rating and FOX dropped to fourth with a 2.8 rating. The CW stayed fifth with a 1.4 rating.

The first Sunday [sic] (I think they meant Friday ;) ) of May sweeps was dominant for CBS, as the network won all three primetime hours and also led the key demographic.

Overall, CBS averaged a 6.2 rating/12 share, far ahead of the 4.2/8 for second place ABC of NBC's 4.1/8 in third. FOX was fourth with a 3.16, followed closely by The CW's 2.7/5.

Among adults 18-49, CBS' margin of victory was less, doing a 2.4 rating in the all-important demo, barely beating the 2.2 rating for ABC. FOX and NBC's 1.6 ratings followed, with the CW's 1.4 rating bringing up the rear.

Ratings for "Desperate Housewives" are down, but the soapy drama was still able to push ABC to a narrow win on the first Sunday of May sweeps.

Overall, ABC and CBS posted the same 7.4 rating/13 share, though ABC had the advantage in total viewers. NBC was a distant third with a 4.3/8, followed closely by FOX's 3.9/7. The CW brought up the rear with a 1.2/2.

ABC won big among adults 18-49, with a 4.4 rating in the key demographic. FOX moved up to second with a 3.1 rating, leaving CBS' 2.7 rating stuck in third. NBC had a 1.7 rating for fourth and The CW stayed fifth with a 0.7 rating.

In other ratings news, CBS won Saturday night with a procedural repeat-fueled 4.2/8, just ahead of the 3.9/8 for NBC and FOX's 3.5/7. As usual, FOX used "Cops" and "America's Most Wanted" to earn a 2.0 rating and win the key 18-49 demographic.

ABC reaped the benefits of an extended "Dancing with the Stars" Monday on the way to a ratings victory.

For the night, ABC averaged a 10.2 rating/16 share, topping second-place CBS, 8.2/13, by a healthy margin in the overall standings. NBC finished third at 6.1/10. FOX's 5.5/9 was good for fourth, and The CW was well back at 1.6/2.

The adults 18-49 race was much closer. ABC still led the way with a 4.4 rating, but CBS, 4.1, and NBC, 3.9, were not far behind. FOX was in the mix as well with a 3.4, while The CW managed only a 1.0.

CBS averaged a 6.5 rating/12 share in primetime to finish well ahead of second-place NBC, 5.1/10. ABC, 3.6/7, came in third. The CW's 2.6/5 beat out FOX's 2.4/5 for fourth.

In the adults 18-49 demographic, CBS' 2.6 rating led the way. No one else topped 2.0; NBC came closest with a 1.8. The CW took third at 1.6, followed by ABC, 1.4, and FOX, 1.3.

Overall, CBS averaged a 7.2 rating/13 share and 12.16 million viewers in primetime, beating ABC's 7.1 rating/13 share and 11.25 million viewers. FOX was a distant third with a 3.4/6, followed closely by NBC's 3.3/6. The CW was last with a 1.4/3.

ABC grabbed top prize among adults 18-49, doing a 4.0 rating in the key demographic. CBS wasn't far behind with a 3.7 rating, with FOX's 2.6 rating good enough for third. NBC's 1.7 rating and the 0.7 rating for The CW trailed.

In other ratings news, Saturday night's ratings race found all four networks in a tight bunch. Overall, CBS rode its procedural repeats and "48 Hours Mystery" to a 4.3/9, nipping NBC's 4.2/8. Among adults 18-49, CBS and ABC posted matching 1.5 ratings, while FOX and NBC were right behind with a 1.4 rating tie.

For the night, FOX averaged a 13.2 rating/21 share, well above second-place ABC's 8.4/13. CBS took third with a 6.1/10, beating out NBC's 5.8/9. The CW came in at 2.2/3.
