Average 622/722 Temperature thread, Is your's Hot?

Hi Stormbo, I`m having the same problems as you. I had a 722 with the latest software L617RJQB-N, installed on 2/7/09 with Temperature readings of H-136, L-73, Avg-73. Just checked them 3/6/09 and my Temperatures have not moved a degree in a month. 2 weeks ago I installed a fan to get heat out of unit - temperatures still "frozen". I called Dish, they could not help me. A re-boot was done, still no luck. I also would appreciate any answers to fix this problem. This RX is sitting out in the open, raised 1 1/2" Thank you, Skip

The last thing you want to do to silence a noisy fan is to enclose the unit! That might quiet it some but the heat increase would cause the fan to run all that much more, and perhaps in the highest/loudest speed more often. Look back through this thread for what folks have done to cool their units. A quiet 100cfm box fan placed on the right side of the receiver(looking from the front) aligned with the vent slots might push enough air into it that the internal fan won't need to run at all. Alternately, one or more quiet fans placed at the left side vents sucking out might accomplish the same thing.
My 622 free stands in open air. I have it raised up slightly from the HTIB receiver directly below it. The internal fan only comes on during reboots, and that was true even before I made the modifications detailed in this thread...

just found this forum and in looking around i felt i shoule make my first post here. i have had dish since mid december and started out with a SD TV and top 200 programming. well once i was hooked up i said to myself, time for a HD TV!!! I went a bought one and called dish to get my HD dish and receiver. the first VIP722 lasted about 3 weeks then started acting up. i noticed it was real hot whein i use. i eventulay had to call dish when i could not get it to reset by unplugging it. they replaced it and with a brand new one and i have had 0 problems since. my high temp reading is 134, low is 55 and the average is 109
I've read through most of the posts on this thread and I'm left still wondering where is the best place and airflow direction to place a single 80mm case fan to cool down the ViP722?
It appears that if I put it right up next to the receiver blowing in or out that the airflow is much less than the fan normally puts out (even with a 24CFM fan).
Here's the one I bought because of the noise level, airflow, cost, voltage and size:

Only luck I had, is at the back left (facing the unit) with the fan pulling the air out. Drops from 120's to 107 or so. Trying to push air in never got me anywhere. If I remember correctly, this area is pulling air out of the unit across the power supply.
What kind of fan and config did you use? (Right up next to the vent and sealed cracks...)
If you look at the left side vents with a flashlight, youll notice there are actually only two square openings behind the vents (one near the front and one near the back).
I have a thermaltake usb fan (bought from amazon) pushed right up next to the case at the rear square opening. As soon as you put it there, you can feel the warm air coming out.

I tried that already and achieved a 4 degree average temp drop to 114. I was hoping for better since my receiver is open to the room at around 68 degree room temp.
Me too, that's why I'm asking others for help. I can feel the warm air blowing out the back left side.
Here's my temps before:
High: 132
Low: 113
Avg: 118
And after having a fan for 9 days:
High: 132
Low: 93
Avg: 111
Anyone else have any ideas? I want to wait another week with this new fan and see what happens, but after one nightly update, no change. I also raised the receiver off the top of my TV stand by 1/2 inch with some plastic lids from some water bottles and it has good air spacing all around (I think).
The attached pics are my receiver atop the TV cabinet. The fan is blowing into the right side of the receiver as of yesterday. Previously I had it sucking air out of the left side.

My avg temp was 122 a couple of weeks ago. After the fan, my numbers are:
High 131
Low 78
Avg 107

122 indeed is high - did you have it in an enclosure? My average is only 4 degrees higher than yours is now.
The fan is rated at 12V 160mA and I'm running it at 12V 150mA. So it pretty much is at it full speed, but like I said it doesn't seem to get a good air-flow right up touching the side of the receiver. See the pics from my last post.

See, you have yours on the opposite side as me, I never had much luck on that side forcing it in or pulling it out.

Thats the thermaltake usb fan pulling air out of the back right, over the power supply. Dropped from 122 to 107 in the enclosed area.
I tried that for about 5 days and got an average temp drop of only 4 degrees. I was able to get 3 more degree drop by moving it to the front left and sealing off the rest of the left vent (essentially making all the air go out the fan).
We'll see what happens with the fan on the right side. Some people said it would work better, but I've yet to see that. I guess it's worth experimenting until I get it the best.
Strange. Could just be a matter of cfm, my fan may pull more. Its pretty darn loud in a quiet room, but Im running it full blast.
