VIP 722 Noise -- Hot ?

Hi, on Feb 7,`09 Dish Network set-up their system with the VIP 722 and software L 617. I agree with all of you that this DVR Fan & Hard Drive should not have to run 24 / 7. I don`t know how they expect to cool this unit the way the case is made, not enough venting slots! With our high electric rates my wife was concerned about how much energy this system uses? I told her I had no idea, but Solid Signal put me in touch with the Forum, and sent me a Post about power consumption. Posts said; 54 KWH on Stand-by, 55 KWH when TV is on. Needs to be in "open air", I agree. Our 722 must be a little "Different" from what the majority of you are stating, why, I have no idea except maybe they modified the insides a bit? I have an Industrial short stem thermometer sitting on its face with the sensing unit an inch from the left side cooling fins and it reads approximately 88 -- 90 degress with the set running or shut-off, on stand-by, plug is Not pulled. Noise; you have to get with in 3` to hardly hear the Fan & Hard Drive running, I do have very good hearing, but I`m a terrible when it come to Electronics. Even though our 722 is working fine ( temps & noise ), I still feel the Manufacturer (who)? should repair or modify these problems. Constantly running 24 / 7 before long I expect my fan will also be noisy and temps will rise along with my B.P. Thanks to all that take the time to contribute to helping others via this Forum. IT IS Appreciated, Skip

I put a notebook cooling pad (which has a couple of fans) under my 722 and plugged it into the rear USB port on the 722. It seems to keep it significantly cooler.

Because of the tightness of my cabinet, I don't have the clearance for that, which is probably why I am having these problems in the first place.

Either way, the fan is installed, and my starting temps are:

  • High: 138
  • Low: 113
  • Average: 125
Boo, temperature! :down I will report back with any changes.
Any changes to report after 2+ months?

bhelms' fan solution - unfinished business!

Hi again all! I was glad to see this thread re-emerge. It reminded me that I had some unfinished business to attend to here!

When I first posted some experimental results in this thread (#163, 15 June '06) I mentioned the additional experiments I was planning to try. At that time I had taken a number of temp. measurements under varying conditions. I became focused on the BroadCom processer as that was the hot spot in my unit, and I was concerned that it's excessive temp. (>160 deg. F with the lid on) wasn't going to help the long term reliability any. I ended-up leaving the cover off the 622 with a 3-fan laptop cooler blowing down into it for ~2.5 years! In that situation it would run at less than 120F while "active" and less than 100F in standby. Some improvement but not optimal. It sat that way until I finally got around to trying an internal forced air cooling system.

So this past Dec. I sucked out a ton of dust, installed a brushless 12vdc fan ("hot melt" glued to the PCB and HDD mount, powered from the 622's PS), installed heat sinks on the BC chip (held on only by the silicone grease which will harden with time), and took some new measurements. The pics below show the details. The first temp. reading (141F) is with the unit powered in standby, but no fan, and the second (92F) is with the fan running.

At this point the 622 is running again cover on, so I expect the chip temp. to be at least 10 deg, higher. The system is reliable, no glitches. I'll open the unit from time to time to check up on the fan and clear any dust accumulations.

It's hard to say whether or not I'm getting any improved performance or the 622 have a longer life this way, but IMHO it can't hurt!

I can tell you my current reading temps:
104/77/91 F.
I assume those are as reported in the diagnostics screen. Has anyone figured out where those are actually measured? Is that info provided by the HDD or from somewhere on the PCB? TIA...

Hi UnSat, Do you know when Dish updates the Temperature readings? I got a Hi off 139, avg of 114. Hooked up a personal fan for the fun of it, Thermaltake fan will be here in a couple of days, and via my thermometer low temp dropped to 70 and internal fan shut off. 722 said temps didn`t change at all in 2 weeks, that is why I`m trying to find out when they update them, or I may possibly have a faulty unit. Thanks for your input, Skip

I was just about to ask this question myself. Anyone know when the temps update or if there's a way to reset them?

I know all about this. I originally had a VIP612 that was loud. I had it replaced with another VIP612 but that was just as loud. I then had the second 612 replaced with a 722 but it was loud too. I went over to my uncle's house and his 722 is also loud.

I don't really notice it while watching TV but at night when I shut the TV off and the room is quiet, it is quite noisy. I used to have a DirecTV HD DVR that made virtually no noise at all so I was surprised when I switched to Dish Network.

The Dish HD DVRs are very loud when fist turned on because the side fan is running full blast. After about a minute, the side fan shuts down and the DVR is nice and quiet but after a few minutes of use it heats up enough that the side fan comes back on at a low speed. It makes a high pitched noise which makes it noticable in a quiet setting.

The side of the DVR with the fan blows out cool air while the other side has a lot of heat coming out through the heat holes. It does not seem to ever cool down enough to shut the fan off. I'm guessing when internal temp passes 100, the fan comes on which is why it is quite for a few minutes after being turned on.

could the poping noise i get when the picture frame change or channel change be cause by the temp my avg 107 high 120 low 86, Didn't start getting the noise until i hooked up my new Vizio Hdtv 42", but its not the TV because a repair man who came out from Vizio to fix the noise blew up HDTV so i had to rent a little on 32" and there was still popping but not as loud the little tv had only 2 speakers and smaller. I am thinking about a fan, any suggestions where to pick on up. Checked Walmart they don't have anything.

Could be ripples on some rails in case of bad capacitors, but it will require o-scope to check.
If you using L/R analog output.

Actually, you'll need to open new thread and move the noise issue there, it will go totally off-topic here. :(

My 622 and 722 both have ave temps of 122 without any problems. High of 138 and low of 93 on the 722.
622 currently unplugged so don't have the high and lows for it.
