Average 622/722 Temperature thread, Is your's Hot?

So far I saw and like one best working approach for leased DVR - unscrew top cover and shift it back for inch, add on top a fun what will push air into area where are CPU and 7411 chip seen.

I tried this solution on my previous 622. And it definitely cooled the unit down substantially. I had the Thermaltake fan angled to blow air down at front left of receiver. However, and please keep this in mind. The top cover of the receiver has a metal "groove" or step down on it. As you slide the cover back, that groove touches a component on the mother board, and causes sparks. Obviously not good. So. When sliding the top cover back, make sure you lift the front part of it so that it doesnt touch the black heat sink-looking thing that sticks up from the motherboard.

It appears, from P Smith's post, that blowing air into the left side is the best way to cool down. No?

Uh-oh, now you've done it... ;)

Nabril, no, that's what's working for me, blowing air into the left side. See my posting #582 to show how I'm doing it. It works well for me, and keeps my 622 very cool. I'm constantly told it can't work, yet it does for me. I also don't think P. Smith agrees that it's the best way for everybody. His system works from the TOP left side, blowing down into the receiver. Mine blows through the left side outside vents, across the receivers internals.

Maybe I just got lucky, found the perfect combination of fans (I have a dual fan system, see pic in post 582), in the exact location they need to be in, etc, etc. I don't know, but it works extremely well, and I never had to open the cover. My starting temps were up in the 130's also.

My present temps, 3/11/2009 8:23pm EST:

HDD high= 96F
HDD Low = 62F
Hdd Average= 87F

Your low temps still mystery for me; there a lot of holes at left side plus 'double fence' by PS components - it's creating high turbulence airflow, means efficiency of it would be low. If I could I'll place thermocouples close to BCM7038/7411 and at HDD and to LM75 to check what's going on in your DVR.

Does anyone run their DVR with the cover off? The left side where the power supply is is hot enough to hurt holding a hand up to it for long. Was thinking without a cover, the hot air could escape.

Thanks, thread is getting long so I'm sorry if it has been covered.

I'll leave the cover off for now. Good news is the average temp did not go up last night. It is at 120 now and I'd like to see it drop.

I'll look for a small fan. Any recommendations? Maybe something usb powered? Guess it does not have to be usb powered but it should be small and quiet. Hopefully sturdy enough to run 24/7.

I had a cheapo USB-powered 3-fan laptop cooler blowing down into mine (cover off) 24/7 for ~2.5 years! The only issue was the dust accumulation. I bought 2 of them (One of Murphy's Law corollaries: If you have a spare you'll never need it!) for about $15 ea., IIRC. It was still running fine when I took it off and finalized my project...

You can see a picture of it in post #163 in this thread (page 9)...

I've had my case off for a couple of days now and it seems to be helping. I never thought about putting a laptop cooler on the top of the unit. I had one underneath blowing air onto the bottom of the unit but it did not help much.

I agree that the internal fan does next to nothing. Cooler air is blown out while the left side is smoldering.

I wonder if a usb clip on fan aimed into the case would work well?

This is the one Im using in an enclosed area, works well.

Its on the left side (facing the unit) rear, pulling air out of the box. This is the best spot Ive had luck with.

I'm trying different ways to reduce temp.

In your case, is the lid on or off?

Is the fan flush with the side rear of the case or is it perpendicular, directing air from that region out the back?

Thanks much.

My lid is on. Here is a pic, its right up against the case pulling hot air out.

I have a fan in the same place right now and I also blocked the rest of the vent on the left side so that the air being pulled through the cooling fan all has to come from inside the receiver instead of being able to find it's way into the left vent and right back out the fan.

I've mainly had it there for the past 4 weeks and here are my results:
Starting:
Hi 132
Lo 113
Avg 118

Today:
Hi 123 (after 24 days the high temp started to report a lower value)
Lo 93 (after 1 day the low temp reported a 17 degree drop)
Avg 107

I have a 24 CFM fan at 14dB. 11 degree average temp drop is good in my book (after 18 days). I'm waiting to see what happens when the new software L618 rolls out (for temperature updates).
