Here's an alternative that works for me:
I use both an audio and video matrix switcher (see sig) to send my A/V through out the house. All the A/V devices (sat recievers, DVD, etc) are in one central location and output to the switchers. The video signals leave the switcher as a component signal and sent throughout using component to Cat5 Baluns. On the TV side, I have a Cat5 to Component balun. The audio goes into a whole house amp to each room via regular 14/4 in-wall speaker wire to a wall or ceiling speaker.
I think Sling technology will be the ticket for homes not prewired for distribution. I don't know how it will handle the bandwidth for multiple HD signals at once especially over wireless LANs
