Apple IPAD Owner's Thread

A friend of mine asked me if it was possible to password protect his Dropbox stuff, so when he is on the family iPad, only he has access to the materials in it. I told him I did not think it was possible. I am thinking that the iPad really is not focused on multiple users. Sure you can have multiple email accounts in Mail, but no way to shield info from other users.

And to the best of my knowledge, none of the Android phones/tablets provide that either.

For folders and simple spam detection, you might try out Mozilla Thunderbird. You never have to worry about it sending out TNEF encapsulated messages.

For multiple users, the obvious solution is to use a web-based e-mail client instead of a local client.

If you need multiple user password protection, I see there are many e-mail apps that do this. Go into apps and search for email. I began to look at these for better email apps myself but only found one so far that does multiple folders and a junk mail screener. It's called ipad Outlook but is not compatible with gmail and hotmail etc. I'm continuing to search for this to meet my needs but so far none seem to be perfect.

Check out Mail access 2010 for ipad.

harshness- Thunderbird? Do you realize I was looking for an ipad app? Couldn't find that in the app store.

My friend is looking to lock down his dropbox access. The norm with most of the programs out there is that once you log in, you remain logged in.

I do. I did a Google search and a site (techtreak.com) mentioned Thunderbird as an option. Apparently it was a case of wishful thinking.

I'll go back to my web client recommendation (although I don't have a specific one in mind).

There are several multi-user account apps in this article. I have not tried any of them.
Unfortunately, all of those are app-specific. Multiple users for a web browser, or for a cloud service, or for email. None addresses the overall problem, you should be able to "log out" of the entire iPad and lay it on the coffee table, and somebody else should be able to pick it up and "log in" without either's customizations interfering with the other.

There are a couple of those, I've tested one and it made a big mess, the other one I haven't got to yet. Both require a jailbroken device to get to that level of control.

So I decided to buy my first iPad today because of the no tax weekend here in Tennessee. So far I really like it. But the only thing I've found so far that kinda sucks is some of the apps. I already have an iPhone with many apps. But most of those apps on the iPad are small. I can double the size on most of them but it really degrades the picture. I assume most of these apps have an iPad version? And I also assume I would have to buy the iPad versions as well, even though I already paid for most of them? What about the apps that don't have an iPad specific version? I just have to deal with it?

Some apps are universal apps (have a + next to their price) and will format properly on both iPhone and iPad screens. iPhone only apps have to be suffered through at normal size or double size. Apps that have separate iPhone and iPad versions must be paid for twice (unless you're ok with the graphical limitations of running an iPhone specific app on the iPad).

So for future reference, I need to get apps with a + next to the price, or that have HD? Aren't most of the apps designed specifically for the iPad have an HD after the name?

The ones with the + are ones that are universal. IE, one purchase and you get an app designed to work on both the iPad and iPhone. The HD naming is common for apps that come in both iPhone and iPad flavors, but that's not a universal naming convention. When you go into the app store on the iPad it will break out/divide search results based on whether the app was designed for the iPhone or iPad.

Another thing to do is just search for iPad apps in the store. That's an option I often use

Mrs. Pepper decided she wanted one so we got it at Sam's during the no tax weekend. Luckily still 4.3.3 in the box so it's already jailbroken. I guess my need for multiple user profiles has somewhat decreased.

This from the same person by the way who told me a month ago she couldn't see the point in me playing with basically a big version of the iPhone we both already have "and it can't even make phone calls!"

Ah well, I would not spend my life with anyone else.

Discovered what happens when you try to load too many movies on the ipad. The app loads but the movie thumbnails do not appear. Had to use the manual delete function in itunes to remove two movies from my wife's 16 Gb ipad and then the remaining ones reappeared in the Video app.

After a six week back-order, I finally got my new Bamboo Stylus from Wacom. This is a really nice stylus. It is expensive, at $29, but just feels very solid, and has a nice somewhat smaller stylus tip. If you use the iPad to write, and want to be able to take hand-written notes, I'd definitely recommend it.

Mike- How do you rest your hand when writing? Seems that could be a problem. Do you have to write like waving a magic wand or conducting an orchestra?

I use a fingerless glove when using the iPad for artwork. It prevents unintended input and works well.
