Apple Announces new iPhone 5

Ahh so you didnt read the article.
sure i did, i disagree with ti
allow others to make cables, price goes down
apple need to get on the ball and just use a usb like everyone else
i can get those for a couple of dollars anywhere

Makes sense. Thanks for sharing that. Makes me wonder if the adapters form the other manufactures are going to work, or damage the device?

I cancelled the order for cables that i had from third-party manufacturers. Not taking a chance of frying it. Ordered a 30pin dock adapter from Apple. WHY it is not out yet is beyond me.

Just got my iPhone 5 via UPS!! It didn't take too long for the second wave of shipments to reach us!

And will pick up a lightning USB cable at the Apple Store in Chicago tomorrow. I need a second one. ANNOYING.

I have already bought 5 of them plus the one with the phone. I travel a lot and have 2 houses. I want a proper car adapter, I am not really leaning towards the 30pin one. I will wait and just use the headphone jack until a proper one comes out without an adapter.

I realized I dont need a car adapter, I have a USB adapter already, so when I use my wife's car I just need the USB to Lightning cable. And in my car I have direct USB port on the radio.

Mydp is what apple uses and it is royalty free, MHL is the competitor and it costs to use.

And Apple charges $30 for the adapters. The cost can't be that high as many Android phones utilize this connector technology.

As I said, good for consumers as in not paying $30 for cables as opposed to cables much much cheaper for MicroUSB and "only" much cheaper for MHL.

Example:
MHL to HDMI ~10.00 from Monoprice
MHL/Micro USB ~1.50 from Monoprice

It would be instructive if the members commenting on just receiving their phones, would remind us: which carrier & where you ordered.

Right now, my info from Los Angeles Radio Shack stores is this:
- Preordered Sprint handsets have still not arrived.
- Verizon shipped handsets to stores on the 21st without preorder. Little customer interest.
- AT&T handsets arrived on the 21st as scheduled, and are in highest demand.

Not what I expected. ;)

AT&T - ordered on-line at apple.com on the first day of preorders, but at 6 AM Eastern, not at 3 AM as everyone else. :)
Initially it was expected to arrive on October 5. Arrived today!

Well, I, for one, do like the new connector!

Sure, I would prefer it to be an open standard, but compared to other proprietary connectors, this one is the best!
In fact, it's probably the best phone connector ever! Better than micro-USB. Finally, a connector I can easily plug in without turning the lights on.

I spent 5+ years in a Motorola V3i RAZR with an annoyingly fiddly mini-USB.
Now I have a Moto Bluetooth headset with micro-USB.
Can't do 'em in the dark, nor by touch, and neither is built for 5 years of service.

On a related point, a friend has a Spint HTC EVO 4G (hope that's right).
The screen died so he got a refurb.
Within a few months, the mini-USB was intermittent.
Sprint wouldn't warrant it due to too many identical failures.
The metal bracket of the connector wasn't reliably flow-soldered to the board.
Maybe I should disconnect his backlite?...? - ;)

How long has VZW had the iPhone ? It seems to me it's less than two years, so customers aren't eligible for a subsidized upgrade yet. Clearly, VZW customers aren't the Apple die-hards and they are more patient... :D

AT&T model ordered mid-day on the 14th online from Apple. Received it yesterday, the 25th. I haven't starting using it yet. With the talk of the aluminum finish scratching I'm waiting for the case I ordered to arrive before I use it.

I think they got iPhone 4 first quarter 2010, no more than 6 months after release to AT&T.

i have a diehard Verizon-only friend.
Some of these guys are as rabid as iPhone fan-boys! ;)
