Apple Announces new iPhone 5

Other than NIH (not invented here) is there a reason that MHL (mobile high definition link) which can carry hdmi to 1080p plus audio wasnt used. you can charge with micro usb and an mhl to hdmi cable or adapter is inexpensive.

These have been on Android phones for more than a year, including my Motorola Photon.

So I'll be the first to ask: How do you rate the iPhone 5's battery life? It seems to run down faster than my old iPhone 4, but it could be that I'm playing with it more since it's new. I'm currently at 47% and I unplugged from my Mac about ten hours ago.
To answer my own question, I got home from work about 30 minutes ago and had over 86% left on the battery over fourteen hours after undocking. I was showing a few people my new phone, but I was definitely not using it as much as I had been over the weekend. Still, I expected it to be lower than it was.

On the other hand, my Sync's Bluetooth has an issue first thing "catching" up with the new iPhone. Sync will play 3/2 time, stop, play 3/2 time, stop, etc., for three to five times before everything settles down. Since my Sync is at 2.1 and its last update was over a year ago, I may just have to live with it.

Yes, but how many minutes/hours of USAGE did you find under Settings | General | Usage?
Idling in your pocket, it'll run for days (easily a week).
The screen backlite is a major source of load on the battery.

Wow! My phone has been moving fast today: China, Korea, Alaska, and now it's on its way to the next stop, wherever that is. All in one day! The way it goes, I might have it tomorrow or Wednesday. That's way ahead of schedule!

Same here, mine showed up in Houston a couple hours ago. It doesn't say it is out for delivery but it may show up today.

Edit: Woo Hoo, out for delivery. New toy to play with tonight.

I don't know if I believe Apple's numbers. Note that it's always APPLE reporting them, as opposed to AT&T or Verizon or Sprint or any of the distributors. Yes I know there was a lot of hype around the 5 and such, but I just find it REALLY hard to believe that SO many people got it in the first weekend.

EVERY iPhone sold through a carrier is registered with Apple; they know exactly what has been sold, based simply on activations alone. And given demand, its NOT that hard to believe that 5M people got them in such a short time. Yet, that 5M is still "not enough" for Wall Street. (at Wall Street, not you!).

Exactly ! Plus, we wouldn't want the different carriers to put out "their" numbers and they not equal the total numbers that Apple reports !! :D

My iPhone 4 going through the same usage would be somewhere between 70-75%. I should have put that in my post. So, as a comparison between 4 and 5, I appear to have more battery life available. Of course, YMMV.

I am really happy with battery life so far on my iPhone 5. Plugged in to listen to music in the car twice, for about 10 minutes each time, but otherwise unplugged since 7am, on wifi when at home and at the office, but listened to Spotify for an hour while running, and battery is currently at 91%. Granted, the car charge helped, but that is impressive.

We'll see how it holds up when on LTE and NOT wi-fi in Chicago Thursday and Friday...

Wifi actually uses more power, since its an additional radio that's active. If you aren't in a wifi area, turning off the wifi radio saves quite a bit of power.

I'm seeing the WiFi issue on both mine, and the wife's phone. Numerous dead spots through out the house with the phones. Do a speed test with the phone, then with the iPad right next to it, it's like night and day.

When I travel, I turn it off so it isn't searching. But when it is available, wifi preserves battery.

Not having dead spots or problems but will do iPad to iPhone testing. Good idea.

It is an interesting design. As long as Apple lets third parties license/use the technology, it should all work out. Just the first few months are going to be rough as all the third parties perfect their designs.
