I've been reading many posts on Folks discussing picking up Sat 101.0W on small Dishes!! In fact two local electronic retailers are advertising a 18 by 23 inch "Eliptical Quad Sat Dish" equiped with 3 LNB's for $159.00. They say 101.0W is one of the Sats that this small dish can receive??

How is this possible when on my Sat Receiver the Antenna Settings for 101.0W shows up as a C Band Satellite, (that is: AMC4/C 101.0W) - which if I'm not mistaken needs a 6 foot Dish minimum?? A reply on this topic would be much appreciated.

AMC-4 is both a C and Ku band satellite (your receiver should have an AMC-4/Ku slot as well), but the 18" dish is not meant for AMC-4. It is meant for use on DirecTV systems, which use a DirecTV satellite located in the same orbital slot (101w)...

See Lyngsat, North & South America - LyngSat, there are actually two satellites (DirecTV4S/8 and AMC-4) at that location.

what's on 101 Ku for us FTAers:

edit:
but note that a few signals are hot enough to get on small dishes:

Thanks Tron and Anole. Interesting, but I need to find out how to Blind Scan it in re the Antenna Setup for my Receiver. (If it is even possible). The only Frequencies shown in Antenna Setup for my ViewSat Receiver for Sat 101.0W are Tp Freq's starting at 3709!!. Does my Invacom LNB to be set for - LNB Type: Standard, & LNB Freq 10750? Or should I just try a Blind Scan and see what happens? Also can only get an "S" signal Level of 71% (before Blind Scanning) if I change the LNB Freq setting from 10750 to 5150, so do I use 5150 instead of 10750 for LNB Freq settings?

5150 is what is used for C-Band satellites and need a 6 foot dish or larger
10750 is what is used for KU Band...so you would set the LNB for 10750 and would only get the KU stuff

jsattv,
If you haven't figured out how to add a sat yet, its easy with the viewsat. Just go to Channel Scan, scroll down to the line that starts with EDIT TP, Right arrow over to highlight "ADD SAT" and hit OK. It will name it USERSAT. Arrow right again to RENAME the new sat. Then Exit , hit OK to save the new sat, exit back to Installation-Antenna setup and make your changes to the new sat, e.g. LNB type, LNB freq etc. If you LNBF is universal I think you pick 10600, for a standard lnb 10750 on the KU side.Set your switch's port if you have one, etc then blind scan away.

IT WORKS!! IT WORKS!!
Thanks IceBerg, and TurboSat thankx for the valuable info. Got 101.0W scanned in just from ViewSat Antenna Setup. As IceBerg suggested used Standard 10750 then did a Blind Scan and got about 30 Video and about 10 Radio Channels. Then went to "Edit Channels" to see what channels I actually Scanned In. One Tp Freq - 11822 is coming in with a Q of 100% , S is 64%. I've never seen a Q reading that high before - Fantastic!! To see the Tp Frequencies (in Antenna Setup), I have to Scroll down to the Tp Freqs and cycle over until I get to 11822 etc. (Guess my slightly tweating the Dish and Motor last night has helped).

The only downside is that what seems to be the best channels on this Satellite ie: National Geographic, History, Fox News, etc., appear to be Video scrambled since only the Audio portion is available. Lots of Religious and Foreign Channels though.

One other question, are there many more combined C / KU Sats as this opens up a whole new world in this great hobby? Should I look at Mike Kohls' FTA lists for more info?

Yes, Mike has several other lists besides just his Ku for North America list.
And also, the FTA list site I mentioned above has probably the easiest to use list of satellites, with programming organized by language.
Both are very good sources.
Lyngsat is possibly better, but much harder to use for the newbie.

Start with FTAlist and work your way up the ladder.

I still think someone oif higher power has something to do with why alot of religious channels either peak or almost peak the meter ;)

well lets see...You could check Lyngsat. Yellow shows that a satellite does both C&KU but using the normal US satellites these have both

72 AMC6
87 AMC3
89 IA8
91 G11
93 IA6
95 G3
97 IA5
99 G4/G16 (most of KU is for 4DTV)
101 AMC4
103 AMC1
107.3 ANIKF1**
111.1 ANIKF2**
113 SATMEX 6
116.8 SATMEX 5
121 IA13 (KU is mainly for Dish Network)
123 G10
127 H1
129 IA7

**These satellites are both C& KU but KU is used for StarChoice (Canadian DTH company)

Allthough the anik birds are mostly for *C, there are a few feeds on there. Some of them I can't see (must be 4:2:2 or HD) but sometimes there are DVB 4:2:0 feeds that can be seen.

Great detailed List & info IceBerg, & Anole. It's going to be exciting trying to Blind Scan in many of these Sats in the next few months!! One Satellite that I can't seem to get so far is 116.8 - Satmex 5. I can Blind Scan it in but so far no channels have shown up. Guess its too weak for Canada?

One other question: With my center True South Sat being G25 - 97.0W I thought I'd read that the HH120 Motor has a + or - 50 degrees reach from East to West. If this is so, then is there anything worth Scanning in on the far East Amazonas, or the Pas 9 58.0W or 43.0W Sats? There doesn't seem to be much info on these Birds especially Pas 8 58.0W.

Search this forum for that info.
Those birds have been discussed (if only in other threads).
And I think they've been discussed specifically.
I just don't remember the details because they are so low on my eastern horizon. :(

Also, if you don't have a C-band dish/LNB, I don't quite understand how a satellite having C-band is relevant.
Perhaps I breezed over the nuances in an earlier post. :)
edit:
Oh, I seeeeeeee....
It's just the fact that the particular receiver lists a satellite location as C-band only.

another edit:
And to partly answer your question about how many satellites you can aim your dish at, given a particular motor,
Let me direct your attention to my slightly involved comments in this other thread.
If you go through the simple steps, I think you can determine roughly how far your motor can really "see".

Thats exactly the Point Anole, I had no idea that there were combined C / KU Sats and as soon as I saw the C after the Sat Designation in my Receiver Antenna Settings, ie AMC4/C, I didn't know I could Scan it in just for the KU Channels.

Satmex5 is very weak in the northern states. I can get 2 channels on there (12024 & 12028 H channels...Lyngsat shows them) but I had to manually tune them in then scan. They're at low signal so in Canada it probably won't come in.

Pas9 at 58W has Cubavision but you need a Universal LNB
43W has some Italian stuff but I can't get it with a 76cm in MN...maybe a larger dish would work
After that the next satellite is 30W which has a bunch of Spanish & Arabic stuff on it
and thats about it for the Atlantic satellites from this part of earth...there are some more but only people near the east coast can get them (elevation issue) :)

Thanks Iceberg, so when you say " Manually Tune Them In" do you mean selecting the Satellite in Antenna Settings, then Going to Edit TP's and Scanning in the Tp frequencies Manually??

Also how do you select Individual Parts of a memo with the BOX around them to reply to on this Forum? I tried Edit Copy then Edit Paste but it doesn't work very well?

yep. Satmex5 is a bugger here in MN so I manually enter the transponder then move the dish left & right to lock in the signal.

to do a dual quote I just insert [ quote ][ /quote ] around the info you want to do separate. Hit quote to quote the whole reply then take use the above quote /quote around it

so in your above I would put the [ quote ] [ /quote ] (without the space in between) then put your reply :)

Thanks Iceberg, but do you have to go up on the Roof to move the Dish to lock in the signal? I was hoping to be able to do this without having to go back up on the Roof again. Also couldn't get Satmex 5, but I was able to Scan in Solidaridad 2/C 113.0W today with about a Q = 25%. Cooking, Religious, and one Channel that says SunTV with a solid picture that says VIDEOJET VCS! Interesting stuff.

Hope what you have advised me re the double Quote / Quote works. Do you have to type in the Title again, or can I leave it out? Thanks.

If you have a motorized setup, you should not have to manually re-aim the dish when you move to another bird. The motor will take care of that part for you, provided it is installed and aimed correctly. You can use DiSEqC 1.2 to "bump" the dish azimuth in small increments.

amc 4

i am based in montreal and i am wondereing i am able to get amc 4ku ...101west using my dish with a universal lnb

i am based in montreal canada and wonder if i am able to catch amck-ku on my old express vu dish..i have a viewsat extreme
