I've been "lurking" in this forum on and off for a few years. I haven't posted replies as they're either already answered or better answered by others more knowledgeable than I and I haven't posted questions of my own as the answers can usually be found (and usually here) by doing a little research.
I frequent many (many) forums & boards in a wide range of areas, and this one is really one of the best I've visited. I do not mean the web site, layout or script itself but the quality, knowledge, experience & professionalism of its members and contributors. Congratulations & keep up the good work!
You don't receive feedback from others like myself whom you've helped countless times without knowing it and I just thought you should know that your time and efforts are helpful and very much appreciated. Thanks for your help!
Anyway, to my question..
I have a 625 receiver from DISH Network and a 522 I purchased planning to use as a second receiver. My intention was primarily to have the option of using one receiver or the other, my goal being to double the DVR drive space, not necessarily to use them both simultaneouly (to have 4 lines --though that might be nice!).
I since learned that, even with me buying it outright, they still expect me to pay an additional monthly charge to use a second receiver. I'm probably not going to do this so I now need to decide whether I should just sell it or if there's any other potential use.
- Using either usb (I think probably not) or the standard coax TV in/out with splitters, can the 522 be connected in series (after the 625) to use the 522's dvr with the 625 receiver? (Essentially, one receiver but with 2x the dvr space)
- Using a separate dish/satellite setup, etc, can the 522 be used as a receiver (with or without DVR) for free to air satellite?
- In conjunction with a DTVPal (or other DTV converter), can a 522 be used simply as a DVR to record over the air DTV?
- Can it be somehow used as a DTV converter, itself?
- Other than having it activated and paying additional monthly charges to DISH Network, etc, can a privately owned, unactivated, 522 or 625 receiver without smartcard be used in other way to serve any purpose?
Regardless of whether or not it is practical to do, requires modifications to the receiver (Obviously, I'm asking this only in reference to a privately owned receiver; NOT DISH Network property), is beyond my expertise, etc. or that I'd actually ever do it, at this point, I'd merely like to know what's "technically possible".
Thank you
