AL EAST 2009

Boston Pitching Surplus

By Tim Dierkes
ESPN's Buster Olney speculates on Boston's pitching surplus:
Eventually, it figures that Justin Masterson will go back to the Boston bullpen, and that will create the spot in the rotation for Daisuke Matsuzaka. If the Red Sox want to create another for Clay Buchholz, they would always have the option of taking offers for a veteran pitcher who has had quality starts in four of his six outings. That guy is Brad Penny, who might be a nice fit for a team like the Milwaukee Brewers or the Mets. That's all speculation at this point.
Even if Buchholz can't supplant Penny, how about John Smoltz? He's back on track and may even pitch an extended spring training game on Friday. The surplus also includes 22 year-old Michael Bowden, he of the 1.01 ERA in five Triple A starts.
The best bet for the Sox may be to just hoard this depth in the event of an injury. Even though most expect Jon Lester, Josh Beckett, and Penny to pitch much better from here on out, the fact is that Boston's rotation ranks dead last in the AL with a collective 5.81 ERA. They're 20-12 despite that stat.
Clay Buchholz is on a roll lately in AAA:

How much more can he do? Clay Buchholz has been out of control on the mound lately, in a good way. Buchholz struck out 11 batters over eight scoreless innings in this morning's start against Toledo. He allowed just four hits in his outing, and walked no one.

Buchholz now has a 1.03 ERA in six starts over 35 innings. He's allowed just 16 hits and four earned runs with 37 strikeouts and 10 walks. Batters are hitting .130 against him. Over his last 20 1/3 innings, Buchholz hasn't allowed a run, and has struck out 25 batters.

But there's also no spot for him in the rotation at the moment, despite the fact that the Sox starters are at the bottom of the American League in ERA.

Ummm ....
You failed to read the REST of the STORY :D
Eddie Bodine also pitched in this game and the Hens ended up winning the game in extra's 1-0.

Both pitchers pitched extremely well.

Bodine went 9 innings giving up just ONE hit and Buckholtz went 8 strong giving up 4 hits.

I'd say both teams pitching looks real good for the current future.

According to the Providence Journal-Bulletin, first baseman/outfielder Chris Carter has joined the Red Sox in Anaheim. It is not known if Carter will be activated for tonight's game against the Angels. The 26-year-old was hitting .301 with the Pawtucket Red Sox.

Is he taking Ortiz 's spot ? :o

Bill, what are your thoughts on Ortiz's... not-what-he-usually-hits offensive numbers?

I'm not gonna lie Sabres, I'm very concerned about Papi.

IMO, this is more than a slump. It's hard for me to knock the big man, he's brought SO MUCH to this team and has been a class act all the way. I'm just afraid this MAY be the beginning of the end. :(

I think the Sox are gonna have to pony up one or two of their promising youngsters to get a bat at the trade deadline. If it were up to me, I'd sink or swim with Papi and try to upgrade (once again ) at shortstop.

Bill, the good thing about the Sox is that they are playing well and they have such a surplus especially with pitching that you could dangle and good pitching prospect or two to get a solid hitter to fill Papi's shoes. I look at it like this. If I'm in the Red Sox shoes and have so much good young pitching and need a bat, I dont even think twice about making a trade. Papi makes that big a difference.

Very true Mets, but the key will be who will they give up in a trade (if anybody). I think Daniel Bard is and should be untouchable.

Actually, the question is : Who can they get and do you, can you , wait till the trade deadline ...
If they get someone earlier, they will get a better deal.

NO your NOT getting M. Cabrera

Who says I/we want him?

Don't get me wrong, he's a great hitter, but not only would the Sox have to give up several prospects (something they've been very reluctant to do recently) they'd have another Manny-like contract on their hands (not that Cabrera's attitude is anything like Manny's).

Thanks, but no thanks. I'd rather give top prospect, Lars Anderson a shot than give up the farm.

Interesting that there is NO mention in the story of the opposition pitcher pitching as well or better and the other team WINNING the game .....
Why is that interesting?? It's an article written by a Red Sox beat writer about a Red Sox minor league player.

It might be interesting if it was a national story about up-and-coming young pitchers and Bonine was left out. But, that's obviously not the case here.

Better talk to your management then, he was whispered earlier till Dombrowski shot it down.

I posted two articles about this, or there were two out there in the thread....
The one from the Tigers perspective, talked about both pitchers having outstanding stuff today ....
Obviously the Boston perspective is only wanting to look at thier side of things.
