About our future:

Today's equivalent is the "boob bar" or "boob slab" (an at or near phablet class wireless phone) and it arguably makes you even more of a boob than the TV of yore ever did.
I call my 65" OLED screen a TV. Why? Because it's television. It's a ubiquitous thing. People (including myself) use my phone as a TV with the Dishanywhere app. At my age, I'm not going to bother adopting some teen slang phrase. 😁

But it's nice to know their slang so that you know what they're talking about. I didn't know what simp meant until a couple of months ago. So I decided to get educated on the Gen X/Y/Z terminology.

If Scott did decide to charge a premium for the Pit, he should set it up as a true free speech section with no select moderation. The rule would be simple- Free Speech except that which physically threatens or doxes others, including nonmembers. Violators may be banned from the entire site.
Scott should be quite clear with a warning stating- The New Pit is like a cage fight and entering the cage you may be verbally punched! If you have your feelings hurt by something someone else said stay out of the cage. No refunds! You have been warned!
Utterly disagree. Not why I'm there at all. There's no reason whatever to abandon civility.

This gave me a chuckle because it's true. There's only one political persuasion that is the "correct" one in the Pit, and if you don't agree with all of its tenets, you're pretty much persona non grata!

I would say "charge an entry fee or shut it down," but that would sound like a fascist limitation on free speech. I'm ok with leaving it open, but wish it was a more "Friendly" place.
Agree 100%. The Pit is a not (currently) a place for respectful discussion. It is a place dominated by a certain political persuasion where they pounce on people who disagree with them.

Unfortunately, what happens in the "Pit" spills over into the other forums -- bad feelings about those who have insulted us there. Who wants to talk to people who hate you because of your political beliefs? I don't go to the Pit anymore and I prefer not to talk to certain people here-- even outside of the Pit.

That is well known, and I do not think it is consistent with the rebranding of this forum as "Friendly Tech Talk".

.... How about a new forum for discussion about A.I.? And maybe even create an AI Server for members only, or charge a fee to use it?

You got that right. I try to be nice but some of those guys don't know how to play nice which makes it extremely difficult for me to be nice.

Before the recent takeover, "simp" was short for simpleton (someone who lacks common sense).

Now that so many fall under that classification, I suppose they might as well repurpose the word.
In todays times they've gotten that lazy that they speak in abbreviations and acronyms.

I wonder if changing the logo to "SATELLITE GUYS & MORE" would be helpful when the new domain brings people in to check it out?
That was my first thought since the discussions is about things both tech and non-tech so the logo and domain should be satelliteguys&more as friendly tech talk would imply it's only for tech discussions. The satelliteguys name should be kept as that's how things started and history.

I feel like I've heard this story before, when DSLReports tried to rebrand to BroadbandReports. It would be wise to keep both domains active for sure.

As to the ads, I will say, I keep JavaScript disabled for this site except to post and I do use an adblocker. They're not too terrible on a desktop but on Safari on iPhone they make the site damn near unusable. Seriously, disable JavaScript on your iPhone (if you've got one) and try the site with and without it, night and day.

I do like the site, and probably would donate periodically if it meant keeping it alive. I was sad to see DSLReports go and would hate to lose this place too. Thanks for keeping it alive.
Wow, never knew DSLR is gone as I haven't visited for probably 6 months but I can still reach the site and other than the front page with news no later than mid-January 2025, it still works.
