I'm more surprised Temple has higher viewership than Rutgers. Granted, I think the lower stats are influenced heavily by larger programs playing them. Indiana on par with UCLA... umm no.

Pretty much. I also helps when those games are at times people watch, and if they have ranking implications.

Notre Dame has a nationwide following, good years or bad. While every other team (with the exception of the military academies) is regional (you're not going to find any Ohio St bumper stickers in the deep south, but will still find Notre Dame ones).

It's a simple fact of life, which is hard to see when your in that region.

I was walking the beach on South Padre Island Tx last year and had people hollering O-H -I-O .... you are SOOOO delusional if you think that the Buckeyes are not know everywhere in the USA.
Buckeye Fans are everywhere.

There are Plenty of Bars in FLORIDA that are designated Buckeye Bars.

While as I stated above, ND does and has traditionally had a nationwide following , it may be waning. Personally, around here, Deep South, I know more people that would identify as fans of OSU or a Michigan than I do ND.

Of course none of them are as relevant as the local teams of course.


That said, nationwide is so quaint. Rocky (Gizzi) sent me a message the last time he was in Israel. They were selling Bama merch. No other NCAA teams in the store.

Are there people who just follow college teams for no real reason? Sure. Just like there are Steeler fans who could not tell you who the Primanti brothers are or where I-79 goes to. But, IMHO, that is a fairly small part of things.

Rather, people follow colleges because they, or their child or other significant people, actually went there; or because they perceive of the school as being somehow “us”, typically common among more rural states and rural parts of states, especially those w/o pro sports.

And where do you run into people like this, out of state? People that have moved for jobs to better economic places; and people that have retired.

Then UND. UND is in a long term, inevitable and unstoppable decline. Because the nature of non-Hispanic Catholicism is changing. The days where, if you were Catholic, you went to St. whoever high school and then rooted for UND, are fast going away. The idea that being Catholic = fan of UND has long gone away, and will continue to do so.

The days where, if you were Catholic, you went to St. whoever high school and then rooted for UND, are fast going away. BYU falls into a similar category, where some let their religion determine who they root for.

As it is though, the Irish fans that I know are actually Baptist, one was the youth minister of my old church.

Have a saying that Ga Tech fans say around here.

When you see someone with a GT hat, you knew they went to Ga Tech.

Just under a month until week "Zero"

Yep, just got my section confirmation for the Chick Fil A kickoff classic between Ga Tech and Clempson on Labor Day.

Somehow managed to be assigned "VIP Club" tickets, which means being near the 50 yard line with free food and beverages (including alcohol) during the first quarter.

WTH is Week Zero and why was it started, it's plain stupid .

The start of the season is when the first game is played ... or at least it should be.

That said, for me the season starts the Thursday before Sept 3rd .... when all teams play.

Problem is theres a whole slew of games the week before for some reason.

I guess you can start your season any time you want.

What would happen if the NFL did that kinda thing ?

“Week zero” was originally allowed by the NCAA to help a few schools with schedule problems get in games.

Like everything else, it is just another week now. There are like 12 games now, although about half are related to the late rescheduling caused by the reshuffle of CUSA on short notice.

The NCAA basically has no real control over the season anymore, and so many smaller schools/divisions start early in order to get a jump on everyone and get some tv time/exposure.

The Big Ten is on the cusp of television deals that are expected to pay it in excess of $1 billion and create a college football triple-header featuring Fox, CBS and NBC, The Post has confirmed.

The Saturday format would likely be Fox with the noon kickoff followed by CBS in the late afternoon and NBC in prime time. Sources told The Post that CBS is expected to pay in the neighborhood of $350 million per year for the 3:30 p.m. game.

This is a mistake by CBS. Previously CBS had the “best game from the best conference” deal with the SEC. Always had the first pick. Now it will, against the SEC on ABC, have “a game from a conference”.

CBS didn't have much of a choice after losing the SEC 3:30 game to ESPN.

And since the Big Ten already has a partnership with Fox (majority owner of the Big Ten Network), CBS got the best they could get.

I know that Cincy lost a lot from last year, but they were a Top 5 team (made the playoffs) but they seem to be getting No Respect at all from THIS poll ... coming in at #22.

Then again, its the Coaches Poll and most Coaches don't vote in it.
