I'm not going to complain about the homeplate umpire.

I'm not going to complain about the homeplate umpire.

I'm not going to complain about the homeplate umpire.

And I thought I was pissed off at the end of the Pats-Jets game last week. Ohhhhh, where to start.....first of all WHAT are you thinking Saltalamacchia, throwing to 3B with two outs, and your ace relief pitcher about to pitch to their #9 hitter??!! That's two games now that we throw a ball into the outfield, trying to get the guy at 3B. Between that moronic decision and the fact that Salty has been nothing but a K machine, I want to see Ross in there tomorrow night. Obstruction? Seriously? What the bleep was Middlebrooks supposed to do there??!! And finally John Farrell, I'm afraid there's no other way to say this, but you SUCKED tonight!!

Jim Joyce strikes again. Craig wasn't close to the baseline and Middlebrooks was still in the act of fielding.

All your other comments are spot on. Pete Kozma was due up next, possibly the worst hitter(non pitcher) in baseball.

I'll add Workman batting in the 9th. WTF???

With Napoli never getting the chance to swing the bat! You let Workman hit in the ninth inning of a tie game, and then he only pitches to two batters (one being an out) in the bottom of the 9th??!! Unbelievable!!

For all of you that think Boston got shafted on the obstruction call, you don't know the rule. If Middlebrooks had just laid there I doubt the call would have been made. When he raised his feet, end of game.

I know I said I wouldn't post anymore on this thread, but I do want to just clarify the rules here.

First, not that it matters what most think, but most do think they got the call correct. What does matter is that MLB agrees with the call as well.

Second, there does not have to be intent for obstruction to occur. It was called when his feet went up in the air after the play.

Third, the image above posted by Hart5150 actual proves that the fielder was in the runners baseline. By the rules of baseball, the runner sets the baseline. Since that was where the runner was at the time and the fielder was directly in line created by the runner and home-plate, he was technically in the runners baseline.

I know it sucks that a game was ended on something like this, particularly for Sox fans, but they did get the call correct.

Your image is a little misleading. It appears as if Craig was on the outfield side of the line between second and third, when in fact he as on the homeplate side. Also, the baseline is defined by the path of the runner, not the foul line marked by the chalk. Middlebrooks was in the runners baseline.

This was posted on another site, but it sums up my feelings perfectly when it comes to Farrell's decision making last night:

Ultimately the players decide the game. However, the following moves are Ron Washington level bad:

- Taking Felix out when he was clearly dealing
- Burning his bench in the 7th
- Yet, letting Workman hit
- Not using Napoli, esp in Workman's spot
- Not walking Jay to get to Kozma

The last is easily the worst in my mind. Just indefensible.

I'd like to add to this, pinch hitting for Drew in a tie game with 2 outs and the bases empty. Why take Drew's glove out in that situation?
