2011 Stanley Cup Playoffs

Well, if the Canucks win the cup he won't be able to skate with it on the ice nor celebrate with him team at the stadium. He will have buy a ticket or watch the game on TV like the rest of us. On the other hand, I would bet money that Horton will skate with the cup should Boston win it next week. Rome's cheapshot may very have turned-around this series. We shall see.

He deserves more than that even, but with it being playoff games he is missing, they are worth double.

He should have been suspended indefinitely; with him having the option to appeal his suspension during training camp in September. Furthermore, there should be a fine attached to that suspension equivalent to his salary for 4 games. This being the playoffs, they are already been paid their yearly salary.

I disagree. As blatant and wrong as that hit was, I don't feel that it rises to the level of being labeled egregious conduct. In other words, it did not appear that Rome planned the hit in advance nor intended to hurt Horton...just an incredibly reckless, dangerous and foolish act. I think the league responded appropriately.

How can you say he didn't plan the hit, he lined him up, the hit was late as the puck was gone from his stick by a long shot.

BTW, the hit would have been entirely legal had the puck still been on his stick.

They are moving down the ice in real-time and he probably made the decision in a fraction of a second. The problem, of course, is that he passed the puck a full two seconds earlier. I find it impossible to determine that he planned the hit is such a short timeframe. I agree that it would have been a legal hit if he still had the puck - Horton should have been paying attention. However, he probably would have been if he had puck possession. I'm still not a big fan of throwing a full check on a player who isn't paying attention...even when he should be.

I still think Rome threw a terrible cheapshot! However, I feel the 4-game suspension is appropriate given the circumstances. Hopefully Rome will learn a lesson.

I may change mu mind once I have a chance to see the hit where I can really look at it, I did not notice that he went for the head.
Did his head hit the ice when he went down ?

I'm watching the replay of the game on NHL Network right now(CBC version). It looked like Rome's shoulder or forearm went up like an upper cut to Horton's jaw. it lifted him off of his skates & he did hit his head on the ice. The play totally upset Don Cherry.

I don't know about that. Would have been a legal hit, if he didn't target his head.

Now that I have had a chance to see it again ....

I disagree with both of your assessments.

from what I saw, the hands stayed ON his stick and was on the ice.
Therefore, there was NO forearm involved.

The guy DID bend his knees before to get a better hit.
the Bruin guy was looking at his pass and got lit up.

IF he got hit in the head, it was from the guys shoulder and or the collision.

Now, I saw the ESPN video of the play, not a breakdown of the hit, so if I went to NFL channel and looked at it I might see it different.
That said, as of this point I think it was a legal hit (IF HE STILL HAD THE PUCK).

There is nothing wrong with hitting with the shoulder, last I checked.

The Upper Cut action you mentioned, was due to him bending his knees before the hit, no forearm involved, from what I saw.

The NHL needs to better define what they deem a dirty, cheap, blindside, etc. hit and be consistent with the punishments they give. I don't follow what happens around the league, unless the Bruins are involved. I don't recall seeing a suspension when Savard was hit. Hate to say it, but I think Chara should have gotten at least 1 game suspension for his hit. I believe the fact it's the Cup finals and the Bruins lost of of their top players for the rest of the series ( possible 4 games ) influenced the NHL in handing down a 4 game suspension. Had he got his bell rung and would be ready to go for game 4 or 5, maybe a 1 game suspension. Maybe nothing at all.

That's probably not as easy as you think. Look at some pass interference calls in football. You can define what it is until you are blue in the face, but ultimately, except for the obvious calls, there will always be that gray area that becomes a judgement call. Same with hockey hits...

The bottom line, for me, is that Rome's hit was blatant, reckless, unnecessary and foolish. There's just some things you don't do...even if Horton still had the puck which, in my opinion, would have made the hit perfectly legal by the rules. In a fraction of a second Rome made an extremely poor judgment and he's now paying the price. For once, I actually think the league acted in appropriately by issuing a 4 Game suspension, and not over-reacting in this case.

Also, I don't think you can regulate "dangerous behavior" through rules because they are so darn subjective, but you can provide a little "Ethics 101" training to all the players. For example, just because a hit may be legal...that doesn't give a player carte blanch to impale the other guy and drive his head into the ice just because he wasn't paying attention - common sense stuff. On a side note, I feel the league should relax their stance on fisticuffs! Seriously, if two boys have a problem just let 'em drop the gloves and battle-it-out. It's a fair fight, the fight is over in 30-seconds, you toss 'em both in the penalty box for 5-minutes, and go back to playing hockey. The fans love it - the players love it - you reduce the number of stupid penalties and cheapshots.

Predictions?

So does Boston continue the stomping it administered Monday night or does Vancouver come back focused and determined? Offhand, the Canucks had 40-shots on goal the other night (Thomas played outstanding) while Luongo couldn't stop a puck if he had bricks & mortar. I am expecting another very competitive and close game this evening. Vancouver 2-1 over Boston.

We shall see...

I'll tell you one thing, if tonight's game was played 16 years ago (in the air conditioned-less Boston Garden), there's NO WAY they would have been able to play with the heat and humidity that's currently here!
