2011 AL Central Thread

Porcello pitched another good game...just need some of his "stuff" to rub-off on Penny and whomever is occupying the 5th starting slot. Heck, we're very close to having four .300 hitters in the line.

and STILL can't win 3 out of 4 usually.

Tigers have 3-4 very good hitters and a boatload of .250 and under avg. hitting players.
A HUGE disparity between the good and the BAD.

Because of this, the tigers could break it open , like tonight (12 runs) or get shut down (0-1 runs) any night.

These same very good hitters also have very bad nights far to often.

To me this "consistency" problem points its finger directly at the management team. At least they brought in Betemit to help.

My other concern, as you pointed-out the other day, is the fact only the Angels and Tigers have three (3) 10-game winners, yet the Angels are nearly 15-games above .500; given this stat it is hard to believe the Tigers' team pitching ranks 25th in the MLB. There are still too many substander pitchers on the staff. Unfortunately, it's too late to do anything about this situation. Of course, we should be sending some of these guys down to Toledo for some work and instruction.

Phil Coke is working hard to help push his ERA over 5...you know, in the area of Brad Penny. Penny and Coke need to be shown the door, the bench or learn how to pitch in the big leagues. Of course, here is my interpretation of showing them the ropes at this point.

Detroit is 4-16 when its fifth starter is on the mound.
They haven't won from that slot since mid-June.

Another GREAT reason to go back to a 4 man rotation !

They need to go with a 4-man rotation the rest of the year and only go a 5th man when they have a make-up game. Else, they risk not winning the division...even with four (4) .300 hitters.

I don't know if it will payoff, but the move can't hurt. I keep hoping that one day Zumaya will return to the team and be 100%. Of course, I think we both know his career is 99.99% over.

I ahve been trying to figure out how to contact someone that might know what Zumaya's status is, awhile back there was talk that he could be back for the last half, but nothing of late.

I thought about contacting FSN Detroit, but couldn't find a email. Thinking seeing that they carry the games and they seem to have email discussions during the games from time to time.

When is Zumaya's contract over with the Tigers? I noticed he was paid close to 1M this year...just hope he has invested it well. Good guy who caught a tough break.

Amazing Stat...

...Justin Verlander has now thrown at least 100 pitches in 40 consecutive starts dating back to the middle of last season. Pitch count data is only available going back a couple decades, but Verlander’s streak of 40 straight 100-pitch outings is the most of any pitcher during that time.

JUSTIN VERLANDER 2010-2011 40
Randy Johnson 1998-1999 38
Randy Johnson 1992-1993 37
Felix Hernandez 2009-2010 32
Randy Johnson 1999-2000 30
Carlos Zambrano 2005-2006 30

Indians will need yet ANOTHER ninth inning rally to pull this one out, trailing the Royals 5-3 going into the bottom of 9.

It's over, KC wins 2 of 3 from the Indians this weekend.

Tigers 2.5 up on the rest.

Tigers have KC coming soon, better not take them lightly.

Rangers first, starting on Tuesday and KC next weekend.
