The flaw with that scenario is if the team that scores the field goal first,if they get the ball back after the other team fails to score,if they score again, even by another field goal, then they win? Or how about if the first team to score a field goal, rides out the OT period without anybody scoring again,do they win the game,or do they keep playing OT period after OT period(even though the one team is technically ahead by 3 points) until someone sores again? No matter how you look at it or try to explain it,the new rules are a joke & the NFL needs to get over their superiority complex & adopt simpler, fairer OT rules like the CFL or college.

It's pretty simple... both teams get a possession, but if the first gets a TD it's game over. If it's a tie after 2 possessions regardless of what happens (no score x2, 2x FGs), then it's sudden death. In the playoffs there's no tie so you would have another OT period if time expires with the same rules.

Broncos illustrated a potential problem (1 play OT), but what did the Giants do to show they are absurd?

Surely you remember or heard about the 1971(I believe) playoff game between the Miami Dolphins & Kansas City Chiefs. The Giants didn't do anything under the new rules that they couldn't have done under the old ones. People are still going to ask "what changed?"

YEESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!! You want to talk about sweating it out, wow!!! You know the Giants running game wasnt good today and there offensive line, forget about it. The 49ers beat the hell out of Eli. Let me tell you the 49ers, I think, believe or not, gave the game away when the ball touched Williams leg and the Giants recovered and obviously the last one which set up the winning field goal. The 49ers played there rear ends off. They have nothing to be ashamed about.

But, bring on the Patriots!!! That will be a real cake walk, right??:D

You know,I turned the TV on at 3:10 PM thinking that the Ravens-Patriots game was starting at 4PM & saw that they already started the game & the only thing I missed was Steven Tyler messing up the national anthem. At 7:30 PM I turned off the TV on the Giants-49ers game to take a nap, woke up at 9:30 PM to see who won,& saw the game was still in the 4th quarter with over 11 minutes left. So I can honestly say that I didn't miss anything today.

Many OT games have lasted more than one posession..

My point was that nothing happened in this OT game between the Giants & 49ers that the old OT rules couldn't handle. The reality is that the new OT rules had no influence or affect whatsoever in the outcome of this game or in the Broncos-Steelers game. People will still ask "what did the new rules change?"

Yeah but why is this some big point you are trying to make over and over? The new rule is 100% for the scenario where a team wins the coin toss gets a couple first downs and kicks a field goal to end it. It isn't to try and make it so that you can notice anything otherwise.

Look,I understand that some people don't want "shoot out" situations that the (college/CFL) OT rules seem to have both in college & the CFL,but cynics like me will say that the new NFL OT rules accomplished nothing that the old rules couldn't handle.

It's not about 'wanting a shoot out' it's about trying to balance things a bit in this era of offensive football. I'd rather they applied to every game instead of the playoffs, and would rather both teams get a chance before sudden death, otherwise the new rules are fine - even if they weren't really tested this offseason.

In the end,it should be a good Super Bowl. The New York Giants are back in the "underdog role" again. I hope it is as exciting as the last on between them.

It will be interesting to see how the Patriots approach the Giants in the Super Bowl this time. I always thought that arrogance did the Pats in just as much as the Giants did in 2007. The Pats' refusal to go for field goals on 4th down against the Giants showed me that they didn't take the Giants seriously & a lot of people(including me) were glad to see them fall flat & fail to finish the season undefeated.
