2010 NBA Playoffs

I'm picking the Orlando Magic to win it all but I'm surprised at the lack of excitement around Orlando for the team. Back in the 1990's when they went to finals just about everyone in this area cheered for them. You can hardly find any excitement now. A few years back many wanted the team to leave town. I don't think even a championship will bring back the excitement from the old days.

They've beaten two bad basketball teams in the playoffs this year. They haven't accomplished anything yet. If they beat Cleveland or Boston in the ECF, people will start taking them seriously.

Really? Have you BEEN to a playoff game? Or in Orlando itself?

That's too bad.

My city would kill for a winner, but yours barely notices.

Yes. I live in Orlando. The excitement isn't here. They have fans but not like when Shaq was here, in fact nothing like that.

I have been there TWICE on business in the last 2 weeks and I saw plenty of excitment. You have been in the wrong places my friend. I was in downtown Disney and Orlando and there was CAREFUL excitement. In other words, unlike some other cities...playoffs is nice, but unless you win it all...it don't me nothing.

That is what I got....there is plenty excitement from where I have been....

But not like when Shaq was here. This started after Shaq left. One radio station (104.1) ripped the owner( Rich DeVos) for years and wanted the team to leave . Again, I was here in during the time Shaq was here. It's not even close to that and it might never be that way again. Where did you see the Magic Excitement at Downtown Disney?

So you're saying Orlando doesn't embrace Dwight Howard like they once did Shaq?

But, I thought he was "the greatest center of all time"?! :)

No but remember when Shaq first came to the NBA. back then it was a big deal. We did a promotion with him at Nick Studios with the Landshark and had tons of media at that event. The team hadn't been around very long and it just wasn't the same. You couldn't even get regular season tickets back then. The big difference today is that downtown Orlando has some Magic Fever but you don't see it in other places like you did before. I remember seeing tons of bumper stickers, flags all around Sea World, Universal and even in the Disney Area. Nothing like that today. Not even close. Many don't like the owner of the team. Others just don't care for the team anymore. But remember, people come and go here all the time.

Here is a clip from my archives from 1995. My sheltie is in this clip because I was working the event downtown. [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_8LXJjBDWuw"]YouTube- My Sheltie Dog Simba on Orlando Television[/ame]

After having the day to reflect on it, I'd like to say this:

IMO, the performance of the Atlanta Hawks in the series in general, and last night in particular, has to be one of the most GUTLESS things I've ever seen in sports!!

The Hawks body language was, IMO, palpable last night.

In no way am I taking anything away from Orlando (arguably the most impressive team in the playoffs thus far), but that was a disgusting display of "basketball" by the Hawks!

...there are YOUR reasons right there.... But don't say that too loud because those that do understand that about Florida and the sports fans don't get that. It's a transient state with different type of fans moving in and out of areas in this state all the time.

My neighbor works at Planet Hollywood at downtown disney. He asked me to ask you where you saw the Orlando Magic excitement at downtown disney. He's a little surprised that he didn't know about it and wants to check it out.

From the people there. From those that thought the Magic CAN win. I spent a couple night in Bongos...Raglans....and Mambo Grill outside of Downtown Disney.

Oh, OK. Because Disney isn't doing anything for the team. That's why he wanted to see it . It's only walking distance from his workplace.

Disagree greatly.

Look, I know with the overblown media and fair-weather fan reaction following each dramatic win or loss it's easy to overreact, but the fact of the matter is that we have a very good team. If you've seen the way this team has played over the last few years, this would be evident. We're the anti Atlanta Hawks if you will. Sure LeBron makes our "good" team "great" and we'll need his best effort to win, but that's the case with any other successful NBA team. When was the last time an NBA team had success WITHOUT a true star?

Where were you the last decade? The Detroit Pistons! I don't see any of those guys in the HoF.

That time and now is different. Back then, when the Magic was still new...Orlando had NOTHING in terms of sports....NADA.
And they still don't . Not even a minor league baseball team could survive in downtown Orlando. Downtown Orlando is a dump. When I first moved here in 1988 they had Church Street Station and it was a much safer place to go to .
