2010 NBA Free Agency Thread

Woah, hold up skillet. You read the entire Andy Wojonowski (Yahoo Sports) article that you posted the other day, didn't you? There was collusion. He spelled it out. Now it's just a matter of the NBA having enough cajones to investigate.

I read it complete and I still do not see it. Riley ALREADY got his a$$ and his team in hot water for the whole contract issue with Juwan Howard years back. Do you HONESTLY think he would be dumb enough to put the two biggest free agents signings in the history of the franchise at risk? I will give you collusion among the players, there is no doubt they colluded to play together...but guess what, there are NO RULES against players talking to each other. So they signed the three within the rules that are already there.

With basically everyone signed, sealed, and approved, what teams do you consider the biggest winners and losers?

For me, the biggest loser is Minnesota. They let go a stud in Al Jefferson and sign Darko?!

Miami, for obvious reasons, is the runaway winner landing the top 3 free agents. But DO NOT fall asleep on Chicago. They added a shooter in Tarver and a post up player in Boozer and a slasher in Brewer. That is a very good team in the making. Dallas did good in not losing some key players in Dirk and Haywood.

The obvious loser was not the Cavs as a franchise, but the city of Cleveland. They lost ALOT of business and jobs due to Lebron leaving. Another big loser was the New Jersey Nets....they had alot of promise and alot of cap space, but in the end, they signed little of nothing.

Still in limbo as to how they did, the Knicks and the Hawks.

Yes Miami was the clear winner and has drawn a bullseye on it's back. It's just a question of how many championships they win. I think Chris Bosh is a little overrated, people calling them three of the top ten players in the league are off base. Bosh has never won anything in the past. But two generational talents on the same team will be at the very least interesting, and possibly spectacular. And give everybody else a team to root against.

Chicago did well but they have to be kicking themselves at this point for trading Kirk Hinrich. They're going to miss him. I love how Carlos Boozer plays the game, but he has been injured A LOT. Tarver...meh.

The Nets will not attract any marquee free agents until they are at least a lot closer to moving to the Barclays Center in Brooklyn. Everyone knows that.

The Knicks did not accomplish what they set out to do, but signing Amare does give them some credibility for a change. Don't underestimate Raymond Felton either.

Looks like we're going to test that whole 'the Cavaliers are a playoff team even without Lebron' theory. King Man kept them so far out of the loop that by the time he announced his big decision, Cleveland had little options left.

I don't get Atlanta signing Joe Johnson to the max. He quit in the playoffs, said the fans should not be booing the team even when it is down 30 and not trying very hard...IN THE PLAYOFFS. And he was a big reason they were down 30 in the first place. Atlanta is a terrible professional sports town to begin with, and the guy is picking on the people who pay his salary.

But the absolute worst and weirdest move was the Bucks trading for Cory Maggette. Boggles the mind. Such a ball hog, such a non-team guy, hates playing defense...and he's going to be playing for Scott Skiles??? Wow. Brandon Jennings is going to want to go back to Europe by January. Even you stat-heads have to admit Maggette is toxic.

The thing this Cavs team has going for them is that they are "winners". Yes, we have one giant cog missing, but the rest of the team is used to success. They're also pissed off one of their own left them and without saying a word beforehand. Motivation has to count for something, right? When all you hear is that the team is "filled with a bunch of nobodies without LeBron", you better bet they'll be fired up to prove everyone wrong!

Oh, yeah. We also have a new head coach who's had success in "guiding a rebuilding franchise". He also brings an up-tempo style of play that I've been screaming the Cavs try to incorporate into their offense for years. This year, we get to see all the boys out and running.

I think Bosh is one of the top 15-20 players in the league. He won nothing in Toronto because they HAD NOTHING in Toronto. Jason Capono? A green Amir Johnson? A uninterested Turkoglu? Yep, they were going somewhere.... He is the #2 big man in the league behind Howard and Gasol. Cannot blame a ONE guy for having inadequate talent around him. You cannot ALWAYS make lemonade out of piss.;) As far as Miami having a bullseye on them, perfect! They want that...just like the Lakers ALSO want the bullseye on them too. Do you honestly think the HEAT players and fans really and truly care if they are liked or not? These are fans of the Miami Hurricanes, one of the most hated teams in the history of college football. And like the Hurricanes of past(and future...hehehe), they will play with a huge chip on their shoulder. It is gonna be fun this NBA season.;)

Chicago did well but they have to be kicking themselves at this point for trading Kirk Hinrich. They're going to miss him. I love how Carlos Boozer plays the game, but he has been injured A LOT. Tarver...meh.

This is gonna be a better team, but I think they will teeter out playoffs because they have no size and GOD only knows if Boozer, as you stated, will be healthy by years end. Torver is ALOT better than people think. He is a bigger version of Hinrich, but a better rebounder.

The Nets will not attract any marquee free agents until they are at least a lot closer to moving to the Barclays Center in Brooklyn. Everyone knows that.

Sorta of agree. Next year, do not be surprised if they pull something off. They clearly outclassed the Knicks in the presentation to all the free agents, as stated by Lebron, Wade and Bosh. This team has a nice, young necleus...add a 'Melo or a Paul....and suddenly, they will take over the NY fans heart. Don't think for one second that the Nets are not in play for Paul and 'Melo.

The Knicks did not accomplish what they set out to do, but signing Amare does give them some credibility for a change. Don't underestimate Raymond Felton either.

I think letting Lee leave was a HUGE mistake. That could have been SOME front line if they would have been patient and waited out the whole Lebron dog and pony show. On a side note, Golden State is gonna scare some people next year. You watch.;)

Looks like we're going to test that whole 'the Cavaliers are a playoff team even without Lebron' theory. King Man kept them so far out of the loop that by the time he announced his big decision, Cleveland had little options left.

I started thinking about this the other day, and UNLESS they pick-up another decent player, I may have to eat an entire humble pie and change my prediction. Now, Mo Williams, who really wasn't a point guard(Lebron did more setting up than he did) but a VERY small shooting guard....HAS TO play point guard. NOW Antawn Jameson's true colors will show...his playoff averages were NOT a fluke. WAY TOO much will be put on J.J.'s shoulders, Anderson will be forced to start and the way that guy plays with reckless abandon, his body will NOT last an entire season. In the past had Lebron to depend on, will be FORCED to play well with no great player to bail their collective a$$e$$ out. They will either show they are a good they are/were a good team...or they may not win more than 25 games and be the worst team in the NBA. There will be no inbetweens here.

In 2 years, this will be the WORST contract in the history of sports...even WORSE than A-Rod's contract in Texas. HOW can you give a guy a max contract when he is not even in the top 15 to 20 players in the league? Hell, he might not even be the best player on HIS TEAM?! This team will do the same thing for the next 3-4 years....be a 5-8 seed, MAY win a 1st round series....and then, hasta la vista baby...gone and forgotten. And the worst part, his contract give them absolutely NO flexibility for the next 6 years.

I think this is another team that will surprise people. They will have a healthy Michael Redd and Andrew Bogot, they resigned a good player in Salmons. Drew Gooden, though was overpaid IMHO, is a solid player also.....they are seriously gonna give the Bulls in the Central division ALOT to handle....IF they stay healthy. They will be a very watched team.

So should we put all the LeBron to Miami talk in this thread now since the dedicated thread on that subject was shut down for no good reason? If someone doesn't like that we babbled on for 76 pages of it, tough. Don't read it. Seems a bit extreme and controlling to shut it down though.

Like it or not, that WAS the biggest sporting news of the summer. It's a shame people against the NBA can't tolerate it.

I may be wrong, but I don't think that thread was closed because of the actual LeBron talk. I think it was because of the incessant sniping going on....

No good reason? WHATEVER!!!

All you were doing in there was arguing over NOTHING!!!

I'll give you #15-20 in the league for Bosh, but your math on big men is a little off. Difficult to be the #2 big man when two guys are ahead of you. ;)

Not sure if I agree with Bosh being #3 big man, but it's arguable.

I did not blame Bosh for anything, and you can make all kind of excuses for him but the bottom line is, as I said, he has never won anything. I didn't say he never would, I said he never has.

As far as Miami having a bullseye on them, perfect! They want that...just like the Lakers ALSO want the bullseye on them too. Bullseye it is.

Wait, you have me confused now. Are you referring to Kyle Korver? Not a bad shooter, but certainly not a replacement for Hinrich. Two totally different players.

Yes, as I said, next year the Nets will be closer to Brooklyn, thus more attractive to free agents.

Anyone who thinks, however, that the Nets will somehow become THE team to root for in New York...is obviously unfamiliar with New York.

You cannot do more than the Islanders did in the 1980's...they won four Stanley Cups and 19 playoff series in a row, while beating the Rangers in the playoffs each of those years. They drew well back then, but as soon as the championships went away, so did most of their front-running 'fans'. ;)

Same thing with the New Jersey Devils. Three Stanley Cups in the last 15 years, perennial contenders, a goalie that holds all the records...and nobody cares.

Only the New York Rangers matter in New York, win or lose, and that's how it will always be. Same with the Knicks.

I think letting Lee leave was a HUGE mistake. That could have been SOME front line if they would have been patient and waited out the whole Lebron dog and pony show. On a side note, Golden State is gonna scare some people next year. You watch.

I think Lee was leaving anyway, after suffering through the Isiah embarassment he needed a new start somewhere...anywhere.

And yes, Golden State will improve...because they traded Cory Maggette.

Welcome to the club. ;)

Milwaukee will be dragged down by Cory Maggette.

Carlos Arroyo confirms that he has resigned with the HEAT...

....according to the Puerto Rican newspaper, El Nuevo Dia and later confirmed by the Ft. Lauderdale Sun Sentinel.

Point guard Carlos Arroyo, who last season added a Latin beat to the Miami Heat, Wednesday told the Sun Sentinel that he is flying back from his native Puerto Rico to re-sign with the team, with the formalities expected to be addressed Thursday.

So now we have a good veteran point guard to run the show.

Here is the starting 5 the may look:

PG - Arroyo/Chalmers
SG - Wade
SF - James
PF - Bosh
C - Anthony

Bench: Arroyo/Chalmers, Ilgauskas, Miller, Haslim, Pittman, Magliore and Varando.
Not to mention a whole bunch of guys they have under D-League contract that they will have to look at.

Is there any reason to watch the NBA next year? Sounds like they might as well etch the Heat's name on the trophy, huh?

Because of Carlos Arroyo? Seriously? Now you're getting paranoid.

The guy has bounced around a bunch of teams during his NBA career, and at 30 years old has proven to be nothing more than a backup. And sometimes not even that.

This is a significant downgrade from the Derek Fisher rumors.

No, not just Arroyo, but with the rest of the team they've pieced together.

Along with the 3 Olympians, they'll have Mario Chalmers, Mike Miller, Udonis Haslem and Big Z coming off the bench. Yikes.

Two generational talents and one very good player. The rest of the lineup is VERY pedestrian.

Does any other team in the league have 2 generational talents and one very good player?

If not, 3 of this starting 5 will outmatch any foe they go against. Arroyo will only play defense. I'm confident he won't even dribble the ball up the court most of the time. Their weakest position is center by far. But fortunately for the Heat, there isn't 1 center in the league that can completely dominate a game from start to finish.

But LeBron, Wade and Bosh SHOULD make the others even better (at least in theory).

I hate to admit it, but the Heat are starting to remind me of the '07-'08 Celtics. Sure they added HOF players in Garnett and Allen to Pierce, but it was the additions of James Posey, Eddie House, Big Baby Davis and P.J. Brown, and the development of Rajon Rondo, Kendrick Perkins and Leon Powe that pushed that team over the top, IMHO.

Bill, that's a good comparison, but think of how dangerous that Celtics team would be if Garnett, Allen and Pierce were in their prime at that time. Even more dangerous, huh? That's the current Miami Heat.

Cavs Trade for Rookie Power Forward

Cavs have agreed in principle with rookie free agent power forward Samardo Samuels on a multi-year deal.

Out of Louisville, Samuels is a 6-9 low post player who impressed with Chicago Bulls summer league team in Vegas.

Deal has partial guarantee in the first year, which means Samuels is likely to make the team. Cavs liked him before draft, didn't have pick.

He ran the point perfectly last year for the HEAT. Was 2nd in the NBA in assist-to-turnover ratio behind ONLY Chris Paul. FISHER was 3rd in HIS TEAM in this stat, which is one of THE most important stats a PG must do well in. You had a guy that was a shoot 1st mentality to change his game completely and statistically to help the team. Stats wise, they had the same stats. THE ONLY reason they wantewd him to play here was because he has PLAYOFF experience, that is it. Arroyo does not.

So before you go into insulting a guy that proved that he CAN play as a starter, at least do a little homework(and has kicked Team USAs a$$ on a few occasions on a international level). This IS NOT a "significant" downgrade. He will have a BETTER statistical year that Fisher..
