2008-09 MLB Hot Stove

The Royals are one of baseball's worst franchises- haven't made the playoffs in two decades- REBUILDING SINCE 1985!!

BUT...they have one of the most beautiful ballparks in the most perfect "America's Heartland" setting that you'll ever experience. They are not being cheap in remodeling it, either. In two years that place will be an absolute jewel. Hopefully, they will get some $$ to spend on what goes on INSIDE the place.

What about all of the revenue sharing $$ they get?? That's supposed to go directly to player salaries...

Mike Mussina To Retire

By Tim Dierkes [November 19 at 4:10pm CST]
According to Ken Rosenthal, Mike Mussina is retiring to spend more time with his family. He goes on out top, with a 20 win season in 2008. The Yankees were already operating under the assumption he would retire.
Moose finishes with 270 wins and a 3.68 career ERA. Is he Hall of Fame material?

Crisp-Ramirez Trade Reactions

By Tim Dierkes [November 19 at 3:50pm CST]
The Red Sox traded center fielder Coco Crisp to the Royals for reliever Ramon Ramirez today; tip of the cap to Brian McRae for the scoop. Let's round up the reactions and consequences.
  • MLB.com's Dick Kaegel says Royals GM Dayton Moore will now attempt to rebuild his bullpen, perhaps by trading an outfielder or first baseman. Kaegel says "word from Chicago downplays the Cubs' reputed interest" in Mark Teahen.
  • MLB.com's Ian Browne says Red Sox GM Theo Epstein will bring in a fourth outfielder to replace Crisp. Browne suggests free agents Gabe Kapler or Rocco Baldelli.
  • Ken Davidoff says the Sox now have the flexibility to move Justin Masterson into the rotation, reducing the leverage of the agents for Derek Lowe and A.J. Burnett.
  • Craig Brown of Royals Authority expects the Royals to trade Teahen now.
  • Dave Cameron gives the slight edge to the Royals in the trade.
  • [ame="http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/blog/index?entryID=3712628&name=gammons_peter"]Red Sox get power arm in exchange for Crisp - ESPN[/ame], the Reds were also part of the "surprisingly small market for Crisp."
  • Matt Porter of the Boston Globe profiles Ramirez.
  • ESPN's Keith Law says both teams may be disappointed, and 2008 may have been Ramirez's career year.

Even more reason to sign Sabathia.

Best wishes Moose. Great career my man!

Best wishes Moose. Great career

Speaking of Moose,

he had one of the all-time "I did my best, but my teammates screwed it up" games.

When Cleveland won the 1997 AL Pennant, Mussina valiantly pitched a GREAT game... unfortunately, the Orioles couldn't hit for beans.

W0w Sabres! Great blast from the past. Those mid-90's Tribe teams were AWESOME!

BTW, the Orioles have not made the playoffs since '97. Talk about how the mighty have fallen.

The Orioles were once revered; now, they are as relavant as the Washington Nationals.

FOXSports.com's Ken Rosenthal calls the Angels and Red Sox the favorites to sign free agent Mark Teixeira.
Of course, he adds that "the Nationals remain a major player, the Yankees can not be discounted and other teams remain involved." The Boston Globe's Tony Massarotti speculated Wednesday that the Red Sox would make Teixeira the biggest offer in franchise history, meaning it would eclipse the eight-year, $160 million deal signed by Manny Ramirez.

Heyman's Latest: Burnett, Lowe, Hudson, Tex

By Tim Dierkes [November 20 at 3:36pm CST]
SI.com's Jon Heyman has several new blog posts up. Let's take a look.
  • The Yankees planned offers in the four-year, $60MM range for A.J. Burnett and Derek Lowe, but that's not sufficient for either pitcher. Burnett wants five years, and Lowe presumably at least $16MM per year and perhaps five as well.
  • The Indians, Mets, and Yankees are in on Orlando Hudson, who wants a five-year, $50MM deal. The Dodgers are another possibility. The New York teams would have to do some shuffling to make room for Hudson. Paul Hoynes of the Cleveland Plain Dealer reported the Indians' interest yesterday evening. The Tribe is also in on Orlando Cabrera, according to Yahoo's Tim Brown.
  • Heyman says the Angels will make a "fair proposal with a deadline" for Mark Teixeira, with Miguel Cabera's eight-year, $153MM deal as a baseline. This echoes recent columns from Ken Rosenthal and Bill Ladson.

Jake Peavy Rumors: Thursday

By Tim Dierkes [November 20 at 2:01pm CST]
2:00pm: David O'Brien says the Padres and Braves need each other and still believes Peavy winds up in Atlanta. I agree. O'Brien also says the Braves' talks for Ryan Ludwick aren't dead.
10:29am: SI.com's Jon Heyman talked to Peavy's agent, Barry Axelrod. Peavy hasn't revised his original list of five teams, but Axelrod says the NL West would interest Peavy (aside from the Rockies). So, maybe Giants fans have something new to speculate about. Axelrod says the list was only guidance for Towers.
8:52am: Let's round up today's Jake Peavy linkage.
  • MLB.com's Carrie Muskat said yesterday the Cubs' talks for Peavy had ended due to budget restraints. Those limitations still exist, so the Cubs would have to get creative.
  • Padres GM Kevin Towers told MLB.com's Corey Brock Wednesday night that he talked to Jim Hendry and the Cubs are still interested in Peavy. Yahoo's Tim Brown heard the same from a source. It'd require a third or fourth team and the aforementioned financial creativity.
  • Towers told Tom Krasovic that talks with the Braves have not resumed and he hasn't heard from the Angels. Krasovic also said, "Among some of his ballplayer friends, Peavy has created the impression that if he is traded, he would like to pitch for the Cubs."

Steinbrenner: Sabathia has deadline to accept Yankees' offer

NEW YORK -- CC Sabathia will have a deadline to accept the New York Yankees' contract proposal.

"We've made him an offer. It's not going to be there forever," Hal Steinbrenner said Thursday after he was approved as the team's new controlling owner during a meeting at Major League Baseball headquarters. New York offered a six-year contract to the pitcher last Friday, the first day teams were allowed to start talking money with free agents. The proposal exceeds Johan Santana's $137.5 million, six-year contract with the New York Mets both in total and average, a baseball official familiar with the negotiations said. He spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to divulge details.
What the hell is Sabathia waiting for? This is a historic deal for a pitcher! Does he really think he will get more than what the Yankees are offering?!

They know what the deadline is so there's really no incentive right now to sign. After seeing contracts like Zito's and Hampton's, you never know, one of these other owners might start a bidding war...

Teixeira isn't worth that kind of money.
