Tiger Woods Tells Jack Nicklaus He 'Doesn't Know' If He'll Play In 2011 U.S. Open

Full Story

Tiger Woods has consistently reiterated his desire to play in the 2011 U.S. Open at Congressional Country Club in Bethesda, Md. from June 16-19, despite injuries that have kept him out since the Masters, excluding a nine-hole debacle at the Players Championship. But there's a possibility his own faith in himself is waning.

In a press conference prior to his event, the Memorial Tournament, Jack Nicklaus let it slip that Woods told him he wasn't sure he would be healthy in time for the U.S. Open. Here's a transcript of Nicklaus' remarks.

Q. Given Tiger's injuries lately, how would you assess now, I know you get asked this all the time, but how would you assess his ability to --

JACK NICKLAUS: I would have no clue. Tiger called me Friday and he was trying to -- he said, I tried up until today to see if I'm going to be able to come and play, but I can't. He said, I'm still hobbling, and he said, I don't know whether I'm going to make the U.S. Open or not.

Nicklaus went on to say that he "suspects" Woods will indeed play, but that he wasn't so sure and knows nothing more beyond what is written. Still, this is definitely a story that bears watching as the event gets closer.

Let's just make the TV coverage as difficult as possible for the viewer, shall we, NBC?? Sorry, switching networks and an extra hour of recording for each segment will make recording anything else a pain!

Though I will be watching it all anyway... Win another tourney, Stricks!! :D

I agree...the schedule is ugly, but the Tivo timers are set so all is well. :)

Stricker coming off a big win this past weekend at Muirfield Village...although he finished ugly those last four holes. Elsewhere, Phil has been showing-up with his B game when he has been playing; his game just isn't quite there, but he's taking a few days to practice at the Congressional this week...so you never know. He just needs to be a little more consistent off the tee, and hit some putts. Also, all the young talent and top 10 have been playing well. Of course, the biggest unknown is whether Tiger Woods will be teeing off this year.

Not a lot of "A" list players teeing off at this weekends St. Jude Classic. Many opted for a week of downtime and practice at The Congessional where the weather has been oppressively hot and humid. I look forward to a awesome U.S. Open tournament this year.

Getting ready to tee-off tomorrow. I'm not the weather is going to cooperate the next couple days. I may drop by Friday afternoon if I get away from work. We shall see.

The rain blew through the area early this morning and field was on the course by 8am. It's actually perfect playing weather as it's overcast and seasonally cool. The sun may even break-out later this afternoon. So far nobody is burning-up the course, but half the field has yet to tee-off.

#15 Tiger Woods is at home today playing around (pun intended) with several cocktail waitresses. I hear he enjoyed a hole in one this morning. :D Seriously, a lot of people are disappointed that he is not playing in this the 111th U.S. Open championship.

Rory McIlroy has been on fire the first two rounds and had a 6-shot lead right now. He set a U.S. Open record for being the only golfer to ever be at -13 before hitting the ball into the water on 18 and logging a double-bogey. Of course, my questions is, Will this talented kid fall apart like he did during the final round of the Masters back in April? Or will he continue to play his game? We shall see.

Holy cow the 18th is one whicked hole! The green is right next to a water hazard, the green and fairway slope sharply to the water, and the grass has been cut almost to the roots any nearby ball is sucked into the drink. The winner will need to find the fairways and play a lot a safe, smart shots. Phil played much better today, but strugged to find the fairway and subsequently had a double-bogey on the 18th.

This weekend is going to be hot and humid. I dont think McIlroy will string together two more good rounds. We shall see.
