Excerpts from the commissioner's letter:

"I recognize that the allegations in Georgia were disputed and that they did not result in criminal charges being filed against you. My decision today is not based on a finding that you violated Georgia law, or on a conclusion that differs from that of the local prosecutor. That said, you are held to a higher standard as an NFL player, and there is nothing about your conduct in Milledgeville that can remotely be described as admirable, responsible, or consistent with either the values of the league or the expectations of our fans."

"Your conduct raises sufficient concerns that I believe effective intervention now is the best step for your personal and professional welfare."

"I believe it is essential that you take full advantage of the resources available to you. My ultimate disposition in this matter will be influenced by the extent to which you do so, what you learn as a result, and a demonstrated commitment to making positive change in your life."

"In your six years in the NFL, you have first thrilled and now disappointed a great many people. I urge you to take full advantage of this opportunity to get your life and career back on track."

Both Greg Aiello and the official NFL twitter have announced the suspension, it's official.

That PFT article is from 2 hours ago, and they posted a followup that says the suspension isnt official until Goodell has told Ben (which Aiello twittered about before announcing it)

It's also at the top of NFL.com - Roethlisberger suspended six games, must undergo evaluation

Ben will miss:

Falcons
at Titans
at Bucs
Ravens
(bye)
Browns
at Dolphins

He'll be back for the Browns game upon good behavior.

...and the can of worms is opened. This statement can be applied to a LOT more than Ben Roethlisberger and Milledgeville.

Sandra

The can of worms has always been open though, he's being punished for conduct detrimental to the team, legal charges are not necessary to do that.

Not disputing that. I'm saying Ben Roethlisberger is not the only player who the part of Goodell's statement I highlighted applies to.

If the NFLPA was doing theor job and looking out for their membership there probably wouldn't have been a "can of worms" to open....

My quote from yesterday:

I'm not so sure about this changing anything though. Ben's own union is responsible for ratifying Goodell's current personal-conduct policy. Until there's at least a new labor agreement in place the players will probably have to live with it...

Who else is out there that this policy has not been applied to??

The league will get ALOT of pressure from it's black players that they ALSO suspend him for "personal conduct". IF he does not, ALOT of the leagues black players will immediately assume there is a double standard in the NFL. Then it would get REALLY ugly.:(

Looks like the league's black players were successful...

"I'll take therapist for $200 Alex!"..... in a Sean Connery voice. :D

Again folks....remember, the NFL MORE than likely have a TON more info than what we have seen because I am MORE than will to assure that they had THEIR OWN PIs investigating this whole issue.

According to the policy and the power it gave, the commish probably didn't need more info. The police report was most likely enough....

...and I would agree. But come on, think of it THIS way....

...you have a MAJOR company and one of their bigger employees get's into in trouble..but there are no chargers. You are gonna tell me that that major company would NOT hire a private investigation company to make sure they are seeing the same thing?
